Ohio State (3-0) vs. Tulane (1-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Tulane Will Win
The quirky rushing offense hasn’t been able to go off quite yet, but but it’s got the ability to get going if it’s able to find a bit of a groove. The Green Wave can balance it out a little bit, too, with enough big play ability to be a concern.
Tulane might be 1-2, but it’s been close. It gave Wake Forest a run in the opener, and fought hard in the loss to UAB, losing both games by a combined 13 points. This week, it’ll need the breaks going its way.
The defense has been strong at taking the ball away with six interceptions, but this week it’s about the offensive side. It has to try controlling the clock, and it has to be close to the 17.6 yards per completion it’s at when it’s on. But …
One Reason Why Ohio State Will Win
This is hardly a consistent passing game, with Jonathan Banks connecting on just 7-of-24 passes against UAB and failing to hit the 50% mark against Wake Forest to kick things off.
It’s going to have to be great to keep up the pace.
OSU quarterback Dwayne Haskins keeps getting better and better, hitting 73% of his throws with a season-high 344 yards in the win over TCU. The Tulane secondary is a big problem, giving up 266 yards per game.
The Green Wave have managed two interceptions in each of the three games, but Haskins isn’t making mistakes – he’s not going to force anything.
Keeping the chains moving won’t be a problem. Tulane doesn’t have much of a pass rush, contributing to one of the nation’s worst defenses at generating third down stops. Ohio State is a machine, ranking third in the nation in third down conversions.
It’s about to explode at home … again.
What’s Going To Happen
Yeah, like Ohio State is going to sputter with Urban Meyer back on the sidelines.
Tulane is just good enough to keep this from being a total wipeout – for about a quarter.
There’s no Nick Bosa to live behind the Green Wave line, but it won’t matter. The Buckeye passing game will sharpen up as the first half goes on to put the game away by halftime. The Tulane offense won’t have any answers after coming up with a few early scoring drives.
