Ohio State (1-0) vs. Rutgers (1-0) Game Preview
There weren’t any issues in Week 1 for a head coachless Ohio State team that scored at will against the hapless Oregon State Beavers. But now it’s the start of Big Ten play, and next week it’s really on with a trip to TCU.
The Buckeyes couldn’t possibly have looked more impressive or been more explosive offensively, putting up 721 yards and scoring 21 points in three of the four quarters. Everything worked, but is there any sort of concern about a defense that gave up 31 points and almost 400 yards?
Rutgers also was impressive in its opener, blasting away on Texas State in an easy-breezy 35-7 win. The offense opened it up more, the defense was stifling, and it was exactly what the team needed to open things up.
But now the Scarlet Knights have to buck history.
They’re 0-4 all-time against Ohio State – all four games in Big Ten play – losing by a combined score of 219-24, and losing the last two 114-0.
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
The offense has a wee bit of a downfield passing game now.
Artur Sitkowski made a slew of mistakes against the Bobcats, but he also threw for 205 yards and a score to go along with a solid ground game that cranked up 218 yards.
There wasn’t any drama for the Buckeyes last week, but Oregon State was perfectly balanced with 196 yards passing and rushing. Helped by an 80-yard run Artavis Pierce came up with 168 yards and two scores on the ground.
Rutgers has to hold up with its solid defensive front, balance out the offense, and connect on a few good midrange throws to keep things going.
One Reason Why Ohio State Will Win
It’s not like Oregon State was West Oregon State … that was an actual Power Five program that the Buckeyes ripped through without breathing hard.
Dwayne Haskins was magnificent, throwing for 313 yards and five scores, and the ground game had big run after big run, starting with Mike Weber’s three score day.
The Rutgers defense is far better than Oregon State’s, but the offense won’t have the pop or the firepower to keep up any sort of pace. The Scarlet Knights will work, and scratch, and claw their way to points on a few decent drives, and then OSU will fly down the field with points coming in three plays in less than a minute.
What’s Going To Happen
This is the game for the Ohio State defense.
Coaches always want to work on something, and this week, it’s challenging the defense that gave up those 31 points to Oregon State to lock down and come up with something fantastic.
Rutgers is far, far stronger than it’s been over the last few years, and it’s probably going bowling, but never mess with a streak.
None of the other four meetings with Ohio State were close, and this one won’t be, either.
