Mississippi State (3-0) vs. Kentucky (3-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win
The offense has been operating at the highest of levels right out of the gate, and Kentucky might not have the firepower to keep up the pace. But best of all for the Bulldogs, the run defense has been amazing so far.
To be fair, most teams have thrown to try keeping up, but so far, the great MSU defensive front has held teams to just 85 rushing yards per game, mainly because they’re third in the nation in tackles for loss.
Kentucky has done a whole lot of things right so far, but the passing game – while efficient – isn’t good enough to carry the offense if QB Terry Wilson and RB Benny Snell aren’t rolling.
Red hot, Nick Fitzgerald threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 107 yards and four scores, in the win over Louisiana. He’s back to form.
One Reason Why Kentucky Will Win
Wilson and Snell are that good.
Wilson has thrown three picks, but he’s also connecting on 70% of his passes and adding some dash, running for 105 yards against Florida and 223 overall. He’s keeping the chains moving, especially on third downs.
Snell wasn’t needed much in the winnower Murray State, but he’s been good for six yards per carry and should be a lock for 100 yards again behind a solid line.
The offensive front isn’t allowing much in the backfield, and UK leads all SEC in fewest sacks allowed. As long as it keeps things moving and controls the time of possession, the rested D should be able to swarm all over Fitzgerald and keep him from going off.
What’s Going To Happen
Mississippi State is too good right now.
The defensive line will have a hard time with Snell, but it’ll keep Wilson under wraps and won’t allow the marches that UK is used to going on.
The takeaways will be the difference. Mississippi State has only given it up twice so far, and UK turned it over four times against Central Michigan and twice against Florida. Fitzgerald will take advantage of the opportunities.
