Michigan State (1-1) vs. Indiana (3-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win
Rested after getting a week off after the Arizona State loss, the Spartans should be recharged and ready to go.
It might the been a rocky start, but the offense has been able to move the chains – converting 52% on third down tries – and the run defense has been tremendous in the short season. Arizona State only managed 44 yards on the ground, and while Utah State ran for three short scores, it finished with a mere 25 yards.
There’s no downfield passing game for the Spartans to worry about – IU just doesn’t get much in the way of yards after the catch – with the the Hoosiers more steady than sensational.
With the time off, MSU RB LJ Scott should be ready to roll. It’s been a rough start, but now he and the ground attack get to deal with a soft Indiana run defense that’s been the second-worst in the Big Ten so far.
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
The Indiana running game has been consistent. It hasn’t gone against a run defense like Michigan State’s, but the offensive line has been a major plus, keeping QB Peyton Ramsey clean and paving the way for over 200 yards on the ground in each of the first three games.
It’s been a rock-solid, even-keep team so far, without a whole lot of problems with penalties, few problems with turnovers, and with a good knack of setting itself up for makable third down chances.
Ramsey has been terrific, connecting on 74% of his throws – going over 70% in all three games – to dink and dunk defenses to death. He doesn’t take a whole lot of chances.
What’s Going To Happen
Michigan State hasn’t shown much so far, but the run defense will be a rock against the IU ground game, and Ramsey won’t be able to push the offense down the field.
The Spartan offense isn’t going to all of a sudden breakout and be unstoppable, but it’ll be balanced, it’ll score early on, and finally, the backfield will come up with a solid performance – even if it’s a grind of a game.
