Miami (1-1) vs. Toledo (1-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Miami Will Win
The defense hasn’t been a problem.
The offense might have blown up on Savannah State, but all offenses blow up on Savannah State. It sputtered against LSU, and after the way last year ended, it still has to prove itself.
The defense, though, has continued to be a killer.
Lost in the loss to LSU was how the D held the Tiger ground game in check, and for all of the love given to QB Joe Burrow, he only completed 46% of his throws for 140 yards.
The defense has the pass rush, it continues to have the elite ability to get into the backfield, and it continues its swarming ways under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz.
One Reason Why Toledo Will Win
Toledo had a scrimmage against VMI, and then it got two weeks to prepare for the Hurricanes. The team should be ready, and the passing game is more than ready to go.
The Rockets have the receivers. Diontae Johnson and Cody Thompson are as good as any twosome the Hurricanes will face all year, and Jon’Vea Johnson cranked up three catches for 80 yards and a score in the opener.
Can Mitchell Guadagni handle the pressure from the Canes? If he gets time to work, the big plays and the deep throws will be there.
And then there’s the question about the Hurricane offense and if it can keep up. Malik Rosier only completed 15-of-35 throws against LSU, and while this is a step down in competition, he and the Miami attack has to prove once again it can explode against a decent opponent. However …
What’s Going To Happen
Rosier threw for 333 yards and three scores against the Rockets last year, taking target practice against the Rocket defensive backs. This year’s Toledo secondary is better, but the Miami offense will finally break out – Savannah State game aside.
The Hurricane defense that got hit for 30 points last year will come up with a better performance. It’s not going to be the game that makes anyone think the Canes are going to take the ACC title, but it’ll be when they start to look like they’re supposed to.
