Miami (2-1) vs. FIU (2-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why FIU Will Win
The passing game is doing a nice job with Bowling Green transfer James Morgan at the helm. At the very least, it’s doing enough to move the ball, with 507 passing yards and five scores over the last two weeks – wins over Old Dominion and UMass.
Best of all, the Golden Panthers are hitting their share of deep passes, averaging over nine yards per toss.
The offensive line is doing a solid job, controlling the clock hasn’t been a problem, and the special teams have been fine. However …
One Reason Why Miami Will Win
The Hurricane defense continues to be nasty.
The team fell off the radar after the opening weekend loss to LSU, but the D is crushing everyone. It leads the nation in tackles for loss – with 35 on the year and 27 over the last two weeks – and it’s been special on the big downs.
Throw LSU into the mix, and offenses are converting just 16% of their third down chances. Only two other teams – Syracuse and Southern Miss – are under 20, and no one else is under 19.
A local game, Miami is going to be focused on the guys from up the road. A lot of them know each other, and even with North Carolina and FSU up next, the effort will be there throughout.
What’s Going To Happen
The Miami offense will be okay, too.
It might not blow up and make this an ugly destruction, but a few big plays from the defense and special teams will make this a relative breather.
This is the first meeting between the to programs since 2007 – a 23-9 Hurricane win – and just the second meeting between the two. It’ll also be the first time Butch Davis is going against his old program as the FIU head man.
But Mark Richt’s guys will have this without much of a problem.
