Temple (0-2) vs. Maryland (2-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Temple Will Win
Nothing is going quite right for the Owls. They’re going to have to win in unconventional areas, because the offense and defense aren’t working.
The Maryland punting game has been an issue and the coverage teams not great. Temple’s special teams are hardly special, but they’re going to need a big return to help out the struggling attack.
The Terps are having a massive penalty problem – the Owls have to keep drives alive and take advantage of every shorter-yardage situation.
This is a far, far better Temple team than it has shown so far. It’s overdue to start playing like it’s supposed to.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
The third down defense has been fantastic so far.
Stuffing Bowling Green is one thing, but it was great on the money downs against Texas, too.
And then there’s Temple’s defense on third downs. What’s been the big issue so far? The D can’t get off the field. The Owls are getting absolutely destroyed in the time of possession battle, and that’s partly because the defense is allowing teams to convert 52% of their third down chances.
Maryland doesn’t have to do anything fancy here. Pound it out with the strong running game, keep winning the turnover battle, hold on to the ball for over 35 minutes. That should be enough.
What’s Going To Happen
The Terps aren’t going to be looking ahead to Minnesota, and they’re going to keep the momentum going after a tremendous start to the season.
They’re going to be efficient, they’re going to own the clock, and they’re going to force three Temple turnovers that will turn a close battle into a walk in the park.
It won’t be anything pretty, but it’ll be a 3-0 start. After the disaster of an offseason, Maryland will be a story.
