Liberty (1-0) vs. Army (0-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Liberty Will Win
That’s a decent Old Dominion team that Liberty ripped through. The Flames didn’t turn it into a blowout until the fourth, but still, a 52-10 win in the FBS debut is hardly bad.
Stephen Calvert threw for 345 yards and four scores, the defense was suffocating at times against the ODU ground game, and now the D that came up with stop after stop in the second half needs to get behind the line against an Army ground game that didn’t look like its normal self against Duke.
Blue Devil QB Daniel Jones hit 13-of-17 passes against the Black Knight secondary. Calvert is going to get the air show going early.
One Reason Why Army Will Win
The Knights can throw a little bit now, too. Granted, they needed to do something to try getting something going against the Duke defense, and Kevin Hopkins wasn’t awful.
The running game will eventually be back to form. Duke has a terrific, veteran defense that knows what it’s doing. And now, the option should be able to blossom, and Hopkins can push the ball down the field a little bit – he threw for almost 200 yards.
The defense wasn’t awful against Duke, and it’s about to do its part to hold down the Flame running game, while the offense keeps control of the clock for well over 35 minutes.
What’s Going To Happen
Liberty is going to be a problem for just about everyone, but Army will bounce back and start to look the part again. Hopkins has to prove he can run the ground game like normal, and this is the game he’ll do it.
Turner Gill’s Liberty club will stay in it until late, but Army will go on one big, long march to close it out.
