Iowa (1-0) vs. Iowa State (0-0) Game Preview

Iowa came up with an impressive second half to get by a strong Northern Illinois 33-7, and now it gets back some suspended parts of the offensive line to go along with a defense that was stifling throughout the opener.

We still don’t know what Iowa State is quite yet.

The Hawkeyes were able to get their game in, but the Cyclones couldn’t get the fun going against South Dakota State, with the game ultimately getting cancelled thanks to a lightning storm. That might have been important.

This should be a good Iowa State team, but if there’s any sort of a struggle this year, it might need that sixth win it would’ve had against the Jackrabbits. Now it needs to get by Iowa for the first time since 2014 – losing three straight, including last season’s 44-41 overtime thriller – with Oklahoma up next.

The Hawkeyes get another fun in-state game to follow – dealing with Northern Iowa – before hosting Wisconsin.

One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win

Yeah, Iowa was able to turn it on to get by NIU, but the passing game had a rough time and it took a big second half to survive.

Nate Stanley only connected on 11-of-23 passes for 108 yards with a touchdown and a pick, getting by mostly because the defense did its part against the Huskie ground game.

The Cyclones have to do what NIU couldn’t – hit the third down plays, and run for at least four yards per carry. And then, make Iowa throw. The secondary should be the star of the Iowa State defense, so win the battle of the running games, and win the game.

One Reason Why Iowa Will Win

The offensive line wasn’t that bad against NIU, and now it gets back Alaric Jackson and Tristan Wirfs. The production up front should go from good to fantastic.

The pass protection will be there for Stanley, and the rotation of running backs should be strong after coming up with 209 yards on the ground. Everyone should get time to work, and now the production has to be there.

This isn’t going to be a shootout like last year – at least, it won’t if it all goes according to plan for the Hawkeyes. Grind it out, keep David Montgomery and the Cyclone offense off the field, get out with another win over the little brother.

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State’s offense won’t be able to do enough to take advantage of its chances.

The Hawkeye D will come up with its second straight suffocating performance, the offense will be just productive enough when it has to be in an uninspiring, but strong win.

However, the storyline will be the Iowa passing game – it won’t be there. It’s going to win on defense and field position.
