Indiana (2-0) vs. Ball State (1-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
The offensive line is starting out the season really, really well.
The pass protection has been there for Peyton Ramsey, and the running game has worked so far averaging 225 yards per game. The O is moving the chains, it’s coming up with timely scores, and considering the FIU win was on the road, it has two good performances so far after beating Virginia.
How did Ball State stay with Notre Dame last week? It came up with three picks. Ramsey has yet to throw an interception this year, overcoming the lack of a downfield passing attack with careful efficiency.
Ball State isn’t bombing away much, either. There’s no downfield passing game, and there have been way too many misfires in the red zone. However …
One Reason Why Ball State Will Win
Ball State’s offensive line is doing a wonderful job in pass protection, too. But unlike Indiana, it has a dangerous pass rush that’s able to generate pressure.
Getting back QB Riley Neal healthy is a big deal, as is the comeback of James Gilbert, who has 172 yards in two games. The Hoosier run defense hasn’t been anything special so far, and there haven’t been enough plays behind the line.
The offense is solid again – it was okay against the Notre Dame defense, if if the passing game struggled – and the aggressive D forces mistakes. The Cardinals don’t go all out to make things happen, but they’re not afraid to take a few chances.
What’s Going To Happen
Ball State is more than just plucky. It’s starting to play well under head coach Mike Neu, and it’s built to pull off a game like this.
But Indiana has been playing on an even keel so far. There’s nothing flashy and nothing special, but it’s been able to get the job done, sidestepping two dangerous landmines to quietly get out to a hot start.
These two are even in so many areas. Indiana just happens to do it all a bit better.
