Duke (2-0) vs. Baylor (2-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Duke Will Win
Duke might be just good enough to overcome the key losses. Daniel Jones was off to a hot start, but Quentin Harris is a good backup quarterback option who hit both of his pass attempts against Northwestern and can run a little bit.
The Blue Devil ground attack hasn’t been anything amazing over the first two games, but Brittain Brown has averaged 4.5 yards per carry and there are more options to help carry the load if needed.
If the O struggles, the D should help the cause. No. 1 so far among ACC teams in total defense, the Blue Devils are only allowing 286 yards per game while crushing it on third downs.
Army and Northwestern were only able to convert 25% of their third down chances. Against mediocre competition, Baylor has been okay so far on third downs, but not amazing.
One Reason Why Baylor Will Win
No, rolling past Abilene Christian and UTSA isn’t anything amazing, but the team got the warm up games it needed. Now there’s a good rotation at quarterback, and now there’s a strong group of skill guys all producing at a high level.
Yeah, Duke losing Jones might matter a whole lot, and not having star corner Mark Gilbert hurts against a suddenly-hot passing attack.
The Bears aren’t cranking up the numbers like they did in the Art Briles era, but they’re airing it out averaging 357 yards per game averaging close to 16 yards per completion.
Denzel Mims, Tennessee transfer Jalen Hurd, and Chris Platt have all gotten off to good starts, and the ground game has been helping the cause with John Lovett and JaMycal Hasty providing a nice 1-2 punch.
What’s Going To Happen
Duke really is that good, and the team is just strong enough to band together and pull this off on the road, but even with Baylor not quite cranking it up like it did over the first two games, it’ll still be too balanced and too good as it raises its game to another level.
Expect a wee bit of a shootout – the Bears are going to be better equipped for it.
