Clemson (4-0) vs. Syracuse (4-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win
How is Syracuse doing this so far? It’s not how it’s been working over the past few seasons under head coach Dino Babers.
The special teams have been solid, and the passing game is okay, but it’s the running game that’s been able to pace the unbeaten team, averaging 278 yards per game.
It starts with QB Eric Dungey – who has been beaten up and battered – leading the team in rushing. He knows Clemson a little bit, too. He was knocked out for the season in the game against the Tigers two years ago, and then last year he pulled off the stunner over them with a 278-yard, three-touchdown, 61-rushing yard performance in the win.
The defense has been outstanding after the opener against Western Michigan, winning the turnover margin has been a key part of the puzzle, and overall, the team is playing well.
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win
Syracuse has yet to play anyone with a dangerous passing game, and it hasn’t mattered. The Orange have picked off seven passes, but they’ve also allowed more 200 yards in three of the four games, and the other one was against the punchless FSU attack.
Trevor Lawrence is going to bomb away from the start.
The pressure is on the freshman, but he’s still the coolest guy in the room. He’s going to push the ball deeper than Kelly Bryant did, and now, with the spotlight on after Bryant’s transfer, he’s going to show everyone what all the fun is about.
He’ll throw a pick, but he’ll also average well over ten yards per pass. And then his defense will take care of the rest.
The Syracuse running game has carried the offense so far, but it’s about to run into the Tiger defensive front that’s allowing just over 103 yards per game – and that’s factoring in dealing with the run first, run only Georgia Tech offense.
What’s Going To Happen
Clemson is going to be a wee bit motivated.
It needs to be great to show that its star freshman quarterback is about to take things to a whole other level, and it wants to win because of last year’s clunker of a loss in the Carrier Dome.
Lawrence is going to be fantastic, the Tiger defense is about to put on a clinic, and it’ll be a great win for a team that’s about to pivot to a whole other level.
This is Lawrence’s team now, and he has nine games – assuming a trip to the ACC Championship – to get ready for the College Football Playoff. At least, that’s the big goal with this move.
It’ll all work out just fine for this week.
Syracuse is for real, but it’s about to run into a hyper-focused Tiger squad.
