Quarterbacks are now like goldfish. If they start floating, then flush him and get a new one
NFL cities, you all need to get what’s going on here. You need to see what’s happening with the quarterbacks at the college level, because these guys are different.
They’re ready, they can play, and best of all, there are a whole lot of them to choose from, meaning we all have to pivot away from the idea that you’re screwed if you don’t spend a few years developing a franchise quarterback.
By Year Two, you should know what you’ve got.
You, Chicago Bears. You need to know right now – not tomorrow, not af-ter breakfast, NOW – if this Mitchell Trubisky thing is going to get any better. Outside of any teams starting rookies – or San Francisco, bad luck – who has a worse quarterback situation than Chicago? Maybe …
Tennessee, you had better make a call on Mr. Mariota immediately.
Dallas, you need to know if it’s Dak, the O line, no receivers, or all of the above, and yeah, New York Giants, you need to figure out who’s got next.
That goes for you, too, New England.
The quarterbacks are going to come in waves now, and they aren’t going to stop. Best of all – again, looking at you, Chicago – you don’t need to bet the franchise on just one guy anymore.
Disagree? Three words: 2018 NFC Championship.
But if you want and need to go the rookie route, fine. The kids are alright.
Does Sam Darnold strike you as someone who can’t handle New York?
Does the moment seem too big for that Mayfield guy in Cleveland? And did Josh Allen wilt against the killer Minnesota defense?
Five quarterbacks were taken in the first round last year, three the year before including Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes after the Trubisky pick – and before that, it was Jared Goff and Carson Wentz.
And there are more where they came from.
Denver whiffed on Paxton Lynch – and that’s the point, Denver is 2-1 and doing okay without him. If a quarterback isn’t great, there’s one around the corner who is.
Look at what’s coming up next.
It’s not just Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins who has everyone buzzing for – maybe – the 2019 draft. NC State’s Ryan Finley is a first rounder. Missouri’s Drew Lock has figured it out and is playing much, much better this year in terms of reading his progressions. Oregon’s Justin Herbert just took target practice for four quarters – blow off the overtime – against Stanford.
All of them have instant starting potential.
Will Grier and Jarrett Stidham will be players, and so will the best quarterback in Buffalo, Tyree Jackson.
And then there are the guys who’ll wow the scouts through the pre-draft process and move up – oh, hello, Colorado’s Steven Montez
Jake Fromm is on his way in two years along with Tua Tagovailoa. And after that? Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and …
It’s just going to keep on coming.
And, of course, if you need one now … that Kaepernick guy is better than what you’ve got, 49ers.
