Cal (2-0) vs. Idaho State (1-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Idaho State Will Win
The Bengals came up with an easy 45-10 win over Western State with an almost perfectly balanced offensive day.
The D allowed just 135 yards, the pass defense was terrific, and the special teams rocked. To have any shot to keep this close, the Bengals need a big play from somewhere, and that’s where Kieran Yancy comes in. A dangerous punt returner, he has to make Cal’s mediocre punting game pay.
The Bear offense has yet to go off. It’s been good enough in the 2-0 start, but if Idaho State can hold down the inefficient Cal passing attack, this could still be a battle into the second half.
One Reason Why Cal Will Win
The Bear defense has been terrific thanks to six picks, great play from the secondary, and timely plays on key downs.
Idaho State won’t be able to go on many – if any – long marches.
Safety Jaylinn Hawkins has turned in a huge start to the season, picking off three passes with two coming in the tight win over North Carolina. The secondary will get two more interceptions, the stops should come early on, and the offense will get to take some chances.
Chase Garbers and the passing game have to start clicking before dealing with Oregon in two weeks. If there are problems or mistakes, the D should clean up the mess.
What’s Going To Happen
With two weeks to rest up and heal for Oregon, Cal will play the starters a little longer than normal. It has to be sharper offensively, it has to find a bit more explosion, and it has to come up with more production from backup running backs so Patrick Laird can get some help.
