Buffalo (3-0) vs. Rutgers (1-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Buffalo Will Win
The Buffalo skills guys are better.
It’s not a joke – Tyree Jackson might just be the best quarterback in Buffalo. He’s hitting 65% of his throws with 12 touchdowns and a pick in the three game winning streak, and it helps to have an NFL target in Anthony Johnson to throw to.
Best of all, KJ Osborn has emerged as a star, too, averaging close to 19 yards per catch with a team-leading 300 yards and five scores. The ground game isn’t special, but there’s a nice rotation of backs to work with.
The offensive line is making it all work, failing to allow a sack so far, and the O is taking advance with just two turnovers so far. On the flip side, Rutgers is coming off a six-giveaway game.
With an offense that’s the third-worst in the country in yards per completion, the Scarlet Knights can’t bomb their way back into a game.
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
Buffalo has given away points over the last few weeks.
The offense can drive down the field, but it failed to come away with points in the red zone twice in the seven-point win over Temple, and was empty on three trips in the seven-point win over Eastern Michigan.
That was Temple and Eastern Michigan – that can’t fly against a Big Ten team, even if it’s Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knight pass rush hasn’t been special so far, but it has enough to get into the backfield and start bothering Jackson. The pass defense has been okay – it should be able to hold up, considering there won’t be much of a ground game to worry about.
What’s Going To Happen
Rutgers is far better than it looked and played in the blowout loss to Kansas, and getting rolled by Ohio State doesn’t count for much in the equation.
And it’s going against a MAC team. But it’s a fantastic MAC team.
It’s do-or-die time for the Scarlet Knight season, and this week, it’ll be the moment that the team starts to look the part. It won’t turn the ball over six times like it did against Kansas, and it’ll manage to grind it out a bit against a UB defensive front that hasn’t been tested yet.
It won’t be a breeze, but the Big Ten team will survive the MAC challenge.
