1. Wisconsin 28, Iowa 17
And that’s it. Wisconsin wins the Big Ten West.
What, Illinois is going to be a factor? Nebraska? Northwestern, Purdue or Minnesota?
No … this was it. Wisconsin went into Iowa City and pulled off a gut-check victory with a great late drive to save the season.
It wasn’t the dominant rushing performance the Badgers need to start having on a consistent basis, but 210 yards against this Iowa defense were good enough. And when the O absolutely needed to have it, Alex Hornibrook delivered.
The 17-of-22 day for 205 yards and three touchdowns was the perfect answer after a disappointing performance against BYU, but the Badger O had to grind and grind some more to get there. It took Iowa mistakes to keep UW in the game, but that’s all it needed.
Iowa did okay to hang in there, and was just one first down away from making this almost impossible for the Badgers to pull it out.
But the Badgers stayed on an even keel, didn’t get rattled, and did what they specialize in – hanging around and then coming through when needed.
If this is going to be the dream season it can still be, Wisconsin has to be more consistent offensively and far tighter in the secondary – this isn’t going to work against Penn State or Michigan on the road.
But for now, the Badgers just won the West again. Get past Nebraska next week without a problem, and then with the trip to Ann Arbor to follow, it’s Game On.
