1. Texas 37, USC 14
There are certain games a coach really, really needs to win.
And now, as rough as the first two games were for Tom Herman – losing to Maryland and struggling to beat Tulsa – he got the home win over USC, and he’s 2-1 with a home showdown with TCU coming up.
Sam Ehlinger might have only hit 15-of-33 passes, but he made the completions count, throwing for 223 yards and two scores with a rushing score.
There wasn’t much of a running game – the O line is still an issue – getting down 14-3 early was scary, but when you hold an opposing ground game to -5 yards, and you get a blocked field goal for a touchdown, you’re doing something right.
With three sacks and ten tackles for loss, the defense rose up and rocked with its nastiest performance of the year – USC couldn’t go anywhere.
Was this the moment when the Longhorns are about to launch their way into something special? They’re not there yet, but considering where they were going into the second quarter, now the Herman era looks like it’s close to turning the corner.
