Big 12 Daily Five: Week 1 What Happened & What Mattered

By

1. West Virginia 40, Tennessee 14

When was the last time something big was expected out of West Virginia, and it came through with a big performance?

It took a little while to get going, and then the Mountaineer offense got on a roll, with Will Grier throwing for 429 yards and five scores, David Sills making two touchdown grabs. and with a shockingly easy win over a Tennessee team that needs a whole lot of work.

It doesn’t matter that the Vols have a long way to go. The pressure was on to show up and look like a real, live threat to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title chase.

This was just a straight up dominant offensive performance, coming up with 547 yards and answering every possible momentum turn with a good drive and points.

Concert third down chances, keep the pressure on the secondary, and keep up a good tempo. West Virginia with this veteran offense can do that.

It would be nice to get more out of the ground game, and the D needs to start coming up with a few takeaways, but the Mountaineers just beat Tennessee 40-14 to open up the season.

They’ll take it.
