What happened and what mattered in the Week 1 Big 12 games to kick off the 2018 college football season?
5. The “other” games
And that’s why you schedule Southern to start the season. TCU QB Shawn Robinson was brilliant – throwing three touchdown passes and running for two more – in the 55-7 win. Good offensive balance, no turnovers – it’s how TCU needed to tune-up.
Baylor equaled last season’s win total, beating Abilene Christian 55-27. Charlie Brewer was good, but NC State transfer Jalan McClendon was better, completing 10-of-13 passes for 173 yards and two scores. The offense was dominant throughout, John Lovett and JaMycal Hasty were fantastic on the ground, and the Bear offense ripped off over 600 yards. This was how the Bears are supposed to play.
Kansas State avoided disaster with 15 points in the fourth quarter to get by South Dakota 27-24. It was about as un-Kansas State as it gets, with four turnovers and 13 penalties in a sloppy effort. Isaiah Zuber returned a punt for a score and caught what tuned out to be the game-winning touchdown grab, but it was the Blake Lynch show – he hit four field goals for the Wildcats to keep them in the game.
Ohhhhhh, Kansas. It appears to be another lost season, starting out losing 26-23 in overtime to Nicholls thanks to an inept offense that a defense that couldn’t come through in the clutch. The D couldn’t heed in regulation – allowing the Colonels to send it into overtime on a field goal – and then gave up a touchdown after only getting a field goal. The ground game averaged 1.8 yards per carry – the O line had a horrible game.
Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor and Iowa State to come when they go final.
