Baylor (1-0) vs. UTSA (0-1) Game Preview

One Reason Why Baylor Will Win

This will be one well-motivated team after losing to UTSA 17-10 last season.

It’s also a different Baylor team with far more talent and a lot more offensive pop.

It was only a warm-up against Abilene Christian, but the offense was fantastic. Charlie Brewer struggled before leaving the game with a back injury – he’s good to go against UTSA – but the rotation with Jalan McClendon worked. The NC State transfer hit 10-of-13 passes with two scores, the running game came up with 295 yards, and the weapons emerged.

This is a deep team with explosion. UTSA still needs time and seasoning, and it needs an offense. The Roadrunners netted just three rushing yards in the 49-7 loss to Arizona State, and the defense didn’t help, giving up a few big plays to the balanced Sun Devil offense.

One Reason Why UTSA Will Win

The Baylor O? Great. The D? Uhhhhh.

There wasn’t much concern after the first half, but the Bears gave up a massive touchdown run, were hit for 220 total yards on the ground, and allowed 466 yards in all to Abilene Christian.

As long as UTSA can keep the Baylor line from getting into the backfield, – Arizona State came up with ten sacks – the offense should look far, far better.

There still won’t be a running game, but the offense should be able to move the chains. The defense is better than it looked against ASU – it’ll do a better job of picking up the slack.

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA will be inspired at home, and it’ll come up with a better overall performance than it did in Tempe, but it won’t matter.

Baylor will give up yards, but the Roadrunner offense won’t be able to crank up the points to take advantage of every opportunity. This will be the game McClendon takes over the quarterback job in a bigger role with a strong performance. The Bear offense will keep working, and UTSA won’t be able to answer.
