One Reason Why Southern Utah Will Win

The Thunderbirds have an offense.

Defense has been optional so far, especially against the run, but Chris Helbig and the passing attack have been outstanding, averaging 328 yards per game. Arizona’s pass defense has been a rumor for long stretches in the first two games.

The Wildcat lines aren’t working. As bad as things have been in Arizona’s start, it’s been the inability to generate any pressure into the backfield, and the O line’s nightmare of a time for the ground game, that have been the killers.

If Arizona is down or looking ahead to the Pac-12 opener at Oregon State, they could get tagged by this attack in a shootout.

One Reason Why Arizona Will Win

Enough. This is the time to get the offense working, the passing game has to click early on, and the running game has to start establishing something positive.

Kevin Sumlin claimed he was going to turn Khalil Tate loose against Houston, and he threw for 341 yards, but he has just 15 carries for 22 yards in the first two games.

You play Southern Utah to tune things up, and no one needs to do that more than Tate and the Arizona offense. The Thunderbirds will give up yards and big plays, and the Wildcats have to take advance. But against a D that allowed 282 rushing yards per game, the ground game needs to show that it really can work.

What’s Going To Happen

The Arizona offense will roll, and the first win in the Sumlin era will come, but it’ll be a wee bit of a grind.

Southern Utah will hit the 300-yard tasing mark and crank up just enough points to make the Wildcats try. It won’t be the cathartic blowout the fan base needs, but at this point, take the win and keep moving.
