Arizona State (2-1) vs. Washington (2-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win
How did Arizona State pull off the stunning 13-7 win last year? It camped out behind the Washington line with five sacks and nine tackles for loss.
The pass rush hasn’t been able to keep up the pace after starting the season with nine sacks, but the plays in the backfield are there withe 27 tackles for loss.
So far, the Washington offensive line has been just okay, not amazing. The running game has yet to go off, and it’s possible to get to QB Jake Browning enough to be a bother.
As good as the Dawg defense might be, it’s not doing much to be a bother up front. Give Manny Wilkins time, and he’ll rip up anyone’s secondary with his great receivers to work with. UW might have battled hard with Auburn and beat Utah, but it hasn’t seen a receiving corps like this one.
However, as good as the passing parts are …
One Reason Why Washington Will Win
Arizona State is having a hard time going on marches. That happens when you go against defenses like Michigan State and San Diego State – it’s not like converting third down chances against this Washington defense will be a breeze, either.
No, the Huskies haven’t been quite as dominant overall as originally expected, but they managed to get the job done at Utah last week in a scary game that was less than scintillating, but was effective. Arizona State has been through some wars so far, but Washington is battle tested, too.
And it has the veteran in Jake Browning to come through in his own house. He has to be able to hold up under the pressure, and after dealing with Auburn and Utah, he should be ready to produce against an aggressive defensive line.
What’s Going To Happen
The Stanford-Oregon battle will get more national love, but this will be the stronger game.
It’s one of the stranger lopsided matchups in college football. Going back to 2001, Arizona State is 1-11 against the Huskies, only losing in 2016 – in Seattle. That’s going make a difference.
Washington is on a ten-game home winning streak going back to the 2016 loss to USC, and has won 16 of the last 17.
And this week, it’s going to hold up against the ASU defensive pressure.
The Sun Devils are the absolute real deal, but this week, Washington starts to look the part as it establishes its dominance in the Pac-12 race.
