3. NC State 35, Virginia 21
And there’s the NC State running game.
Having a quarterback like Ryan Finley has been a wonderful safety blanket, but NC State hasn’t shown off any ground game so far. Against Virginia, it had just enough to show that it can run.
Ricky Person – who was missing early this year with a hamstring problem – ran for 108 yards and Reggie Gallaspy came up with a rushing score, but it was still the Finley show.
The main man completed 22-of-32 passes for 257 yards and three scores, but again, he got some help. The 176 yards on the ground weren’t amazing, but they helped.
The defense did its part, too, holding the Cavalier ground attack to just 93 yards and never let Bryce Perkins go off. The UVa quarterback threw for 258 yards and two scores, but he gave up two picks and only got loose for one decent run.
Even so, the Cavaliers had a shot to stay in it late, but Perkins got picked off.
NC State didn’t turn the ball over, it controlled the clock, and it came up with a strong win over a nice-looking Cavalier team that should go bowling. And now Virginia gets a week off to get ready for Miami, and NC State has a nasty game against Boston College at home – must win with the following two games on the road.
