2. Florida State 36, Samford 26
It’s a win. There will be more, FSU will be better, and there will be times when games like this will be easy.
It might just take a while.
Florida State was able to pull it out, because Deondre Francois wouldn’t let the team lose. However, even with his 320 yards and three scores, it was a frightening performance against an inferior opponent.
Samford threw four picks, but QB Devlin Hodges also let it loose for 475 yards on the Seminole secondary, with Kelvin McKnight catching 14 passes for 215 yards and two scores.
FSU’s usually killer secondary struggled, the offensive line had a tough day, and the running game only managed 134 yards and a score. But at least Willie Taggart got his first win as the head man.
The team came up with a gut-check win. Start there, and build on it. That’s all the Noles can do.
Yeah, there is the built-in excuse of a short week after the Virginia Tech loss. Yeah, it wasn’t a sharp performance – the team just never seemed to be focused defensively.
But that’s what games against Samford are occasionally for. You don’t have to be your best, and you can still get the win.
