3. Penn State 51, Pitt 6
This was a weird game.
In some ways, the Panthers weren’t that awful.
The secondary was okay for stretches, and the defense held firm in the first half.
Qadree Ollison ran well – coming up with a big dash and finishing with 119 yards and a score – but …
The missed extra point was the beginning of the end.
Kenny Pickett couldn’t get anything going with the passing game – finishing with just 55 yards – and there was no keeping up once the shootout started. There were too many breakdowns in all phases to stay in the game, and against a team as good as Penn State, Pitt needed to be perfect, and it wasn’t even close.
The 14 penalties were a disaster, the three turnovers hurt, and the offense couldn’t seem to convert on any key moment to keep the chains moving.
However, this has to be forgotten about in a hurry. Beat Georgia Tech next week, and with a winnable game against North Carolina up next, and Syracuse the next ACC game, there’s a chance for some big things going forward.
But the team can’t be this ineffective in so many areas again.
