1. Virginia Tech 24, Florida State 3
There will be better days for Florida State under Willie Taggart.
There can’t be too many worse ones.
This is a very, very talented Seminole team, in a charged up home environment under a new head coach, and … pfffffffffft.
The air went out of the balloon right away
The Seminoles were destroyed from the start.
Virginia Tech was better coached, more intense, and far, far sharper in all phases.
Josh Jackson and the passing game came up with two scores, the FSU air attack threw three picks – but to be fair, Deondre Francois and to press with no running game to count on.
The special teams came up with a blocked punt for a score, the defense destroyed everything the Noles wanted to do, and outside of an 85-yard Cam Akers dash, the ground attack managed just 11 more rushing yards.
There are still questions about the FSU offensive line, there are still concerns about how the team might do against good teams, and …
Now it’s time to think about Virginia Tech as something amazing.
This is still a strong Florida State defense, but it couldn’t overcome the five turnovers, a miserable play-call in the red zone when there was still a chance to make it a game, and there were the Hokies who came up with a brilliant game.
FSU might be okay. There’s still talent.
Now we know … Virginia Tech is going to be a big, big problem for the rest of the ACC.
