Wyoming (0-0) vs. New Mexico State (0-0) Game Preview
Of course you’re ready for the college football season to start, but the Week 0 soft opening isn’t exactly must-see sports TV. But Hawaii vs. Colorado State should be an interesting Mountain West opener, and Wyoming vs. New Mexico State will be a huge indicator of what’s to come for both programs.
New Mexico State is playing its first game again as an independent, going of after the Sun Belt broke up with the program. The Aggies are coming off a big bowl season with a ton of momentum, but it might all crash with a thud without a strong first game at home against a tough Wyoming team.
The Cowboys should have one of the nation’s best Group of Five defenses, and despite the loss of Josh Allen, the offense should be far better – it can’t be a whole lot worse. If they’re really and truly the team that should be a factor in the Mountain West race, they need to show it by winning this with ease.
It’s the second the two teams have met, with the first coming in 1953. Wyoming won the season-opener 47-0.
One Reason Why Wyoming Will Win
This defense will be an absolute killer.
Eight starters are back from the nation’s top defense in takeaways, led by a terrific group of tacklers, starting with safety Andrew Wingard. There are plenty of strong parts of the defensive puzzle, but the secondary should be the star – that’s a problem for an NMSU team that has to throw.
The Aggies will keep on winging it around despite the loss of QB Tyler Rogers and star WR Jaleel Scott – Matt Romero will get the start for the Aggies. The new guys will have their moments, but the rebuilding offensive front will have a nightmare of a time against what the Cowboys are going to bring up front.
NMSU was a turnover machine last year, and it’s only going to get worse in Week 0 of this season.
One Reason Why New Mexico State Will Win
Can the Aggies really start to win with their defense? They might have to early on.
Defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani gets back a good group with nine starters back. The pass rush should be great, the experience is there in the secondary, and overall, this has the potential to be the best defense yet in the Doug Martin era.
Yeah, it’s a new year and a new team, but Wyoming is coming off a season finishing 125th in the nation in total offense. It’ll be better this season, but not right away.
What’s Going To Happen
The NMSU defense will play inspired ball for most of the game, but it won’t be enough to overcome the massive mistakes on the offensive side.
This won’t be pretty.
Wyoming’s Tyler Vander Waal-led offense will take advantage of the four takeaways from the defense, getting up early and taking the Aggie running game completely out of the equation. The Cowboys won’t be perfect, but they’ll get out with a convincing tune-up road win.
