Virginia (0-0) vs. Richmond (0-0) Game Preview
Virginia was able to go bowling in a stunning season under head coach Bronco Mendenhall. There might be some key losses, but this year’s team could be even better. This game has to prove it.
The Cavaliers have a date at Indiana next, then they play a strong Ohio, then Louisville, then at NC State, then Miami. Blow this against the Spiders, and all but forget about going back to a bowl game.
Richmond was tenth in the nation in total offense with a passing game that averaged 341 yards per game. It’s going to put the pressure on the Virginia secondary all game long – and it’s going to keep the team in the game.
One Reason Why Richmond Will Win
Besides the passing game that welcomes back star receiver Cortrelle Simpson and several of the other top targets, the pass rush is going to be a problem for the Cavalier offensive line.
Virginia didn’t do much up front for the running game, but the pass protection wasn’t awful. However, the Spiders get back all-star lineman Andrew Clyde and LB Dale Matthews to lead a great group of defenders who’ll live in the backfield. The Spiders finished eighth in the FCS in sacks.
One Reason Why Virginia Will Win
Welcome to Bryce Perkins.
Richmond lost big-time passer Kyle Lauletta, and it might take a little bit to get the air show going again. Virginia lost steady leader Kurt Benkert, and might have just upgraded.
Perkins is an Arizona State transfer with the speed, the size, and the ability to transform the Cavalier offense. Yeah, Richmond will generate the pressure, and then Perkins will take off.
And about that Richmond passing game, it’ll be going into the teeth of a Virginia secondary that should be one of the team’s biggest strengths.
What’s Going To Happen
Richmond will put on the pressure from both sides.
Yeah, the passing game will put up yards, and yeah, the defense will attack, but Virginia’s defense will do a strong job of getting off the field when needed, and Perkins is going to be fantastic.
It’s not going to be breezy, but Virginia will be effective as it starts to look more like what a Bronco Mendenhall team is supposed to be. Perkins is going to add that extra dimension right away.
