They’re the sleeper teams. The underrated ones. The teams that we’re all not giving enough attention to going into the season – and it’s about to change.

The preseason college football rankings are out, with the fanfare about the big boys up top, as always. There’s also a whole lot of attention given to the ones who might just be good enough to rise up into the top ten – or higher -when all is said and done.
Here are five teams that aren’t getting any love or respect, but that’s about to change in a big hurry, starting with …
5. Virginia Tech Hokies
At some point, someone’s going to realize that the program has things figured out under Justin Fuente.
Virginia Tech won ten games in 2016 and went off to the ACC Championship, and last year it won nine in a season when Miami was the star of the Coastal Division.
The Hokies are fourth among ACC teams when it comes to the odds of winning the conference title – they’re at 10/1 – but the regular season win total is at just 8.5.
There’s some work to do with a few NFL-caliber losses on the defensive side, but Josh Jackson is among the league’s most dynamic quarterbacks, the defensive front isn’t taking any sort of a step back, and the secondary – as always – is going to be fabulous.
Not to knock your program, Hokie fans, but be happy that Fuente is still in Blacksburg. After coming up with nine wins – watch out, Miami has to come to Lane Stadium – he’s going to be on the short list for one of those mega-gigs with a huge contract.
