Texas (0-0) vs. Maryland (0-0) Game Preview
It was one of the best games of 2017, and it ended up being forgotten after Maryland hit the skids.
It was the opening of the Tom Herman era, and it was a total flop, losing 51-41 at home in a wild and crazy game, but Texas still went on to win a bowl game.
Maryland? It got hammered with quarterback injuries and struggled in a 4-8 run, but now the pieces are healthy and the showdown is in the Terps’ backyard.
And both programs are back to Square One.
Lose again, and the Texas crowd will start to get really, really grouchy. With USC, TCU, at Kansas State and Oklahoma coming up over the first half of the season, it might be a disastrous start if the Longhorns can’t make amends for last year’s gaffe.
For Maryland, last year’s win might not have been a coming out party – again, quarterback injuries – but with three winnable games up next before going to Michigan, a repeat should be a catalyst to a huge September.
One Reason Why Texas Will Win
It’s time to start bombing and keep on throwing against a suspect Terp secondary.
Shane Buechele was brilliant in the loss, throwing for 375 yards and two touchdowns with a pick, and now it’ll be up to the Texas receiving corps to kick it in again for a passing attack that should be on par with the best in the Big 12.
Collin Johnson ripped Maryland to shreds, catching seven passes for 125 yards and a score, and now he’s back leading a great group that can push around the Terp defensive backs – the ball will be spread around.
The Maryland defensive backs can hit, and the safeties are good, but they gave up way too many big plays and couldn’t come up with enough third down stops. That might not change in the opener.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
New offensive coordinator Matt Canada has pieces to work with.
The Terp offense might lose star receiver DJ Moore, but quarterbacks Tyrrell Pigrome and Kasim Hill have healthy knees again, Tavion Jacobs looks like the program’s next great receiver, and all five starters are back on an offensive line that was shaky, but is now experienced.
This should be more like the team that rolled into Austin last year with an attitude and left with a win – and now it’s more experienced. Against a Texas secondary that’s talented, but loses a slew of big parts – along with star LB Malik Jefferson – the Terps should keep up the pace in another shootout.
What’s Going To Happen
If you liked what happened in Austin, get ready for more of the same in Landover.
It won’t be as good as last year’s opener, but the Terp running game that rumbled for 263 yards and four scores will be strong again, the quarterback play will be dynamic, and the close-to-home team will be the sharper of the two.
There will be plenty of fireworks, lots of big pass plays, and a whole lot of fun in the best game of the first big Saturday morning of the college football season.
