10 Best Over/Under Point Total Picks So Far: 0-0

Starting with a few that didn’t quite make the cut, but are still spicy …

Boise State at Troy TOTAL 48 UNDER
Northern Illinois at Iowa TOTAL 48.5 UNDER
Maryland vs. Texas TOTAL 56.5 OVER

10. Michigan at Notre Dame

LINE: PICK, o/u: 46.5

Yeah, the Michigan offense is going to be far better than last season. Yeah, Shea Patterson is going to help out the attack rock. Yeah, the Notre Dame offense is going to be explosive at times. But this should be a bit more of a dogfight than many are going to expect.

It’s not that hard to hit 47 – 27-23 isn’t asking for the world. But there will be a whole lot of field goals and a whole lot of stalled drives. It’ll be fun, but it won’t be a wild-and-crazy firefight type of showdown.

9. Indiana at FIU

LINE: Indiana -10.5, o/u: 57

FIU would like to make this a wee bit of a defensive slugfest, but its defense is going to have a hard time with the Indiana passing game. The Hoosier defense lost a slew of key parts and isn’t going to be a killer. The 57 is a wee bit of a big number considering the Golden Panther offense is questionable, but the Hoosiers should handle most of the heavy lifting.

8. West Virginia vs. Tennessee

LINE: West Virginia -9.5, o/u: 61.5

Dismiss what the Tennessee defense looked and played like at the end of last year when the wheels came off – it’s going to play tougher and nastier under Jeremy Pruitt. However, until it proves it can do anything positive, assume the Vol offense isn’t anything special quite yet.

Of course the West Virginia offense should be a blast, but this should be more like the 31-24 game against Virginia Tech last year than a wild and crazy shootout.

7. Alabama vs. Louisville

LINE: Alabama -24, o/u: 62

Just how much do you believe in the Louisville offense? Alabama beat Florida State 24-7 last year in a dominant Week 1 performance. The Tide hung up 52 on USC to open up 2016, and the total still only got to 58.

Wisconsin provided a battle in 2015, and the total only hit 52. West Virginia came up with 23 in the 2014 opener, and the total got up to 56. You have to go back to the 2004 opener against Utah State – 48-17 Tide – to get a total over 62. Don’t mess with it. Go under.

6. Marshall at Miami University

LINE: Marshall -2, o/u: 51

The best part about it is that the total went down a half a point – you won’t need it. The two combined for 57 points in last year’s opener – a 31-26 Marshall win – and now the two offenses are better. The two should make the 51 look like a two-foot hurdle by halftime in a good shootout between the strong passing attacks.
