TCU (0-0) vs. Southern (0-0) Game Preview
It’s light-scrimmage time for a TCU that needs the preparation SMU and then a potential make-or-break national statement moment against Ohio State the week after.
The Horned Frogs need to tune up the passing game, find the right rotation on the lines, and do everything short of showing the Buckeyes anything to use on film.
Southern has a nice team returning with seven starters back on both sides of the ball, but this – along with the date the following week against Louisiana Tech – is about the paycheck.
One Reason Why Southern Will Win
The Jaguars have to break in a new starting quarterback, and it should get hit with a few big home run shots, but they have a strong defense and should once again be fantastic at controlling the clock.
Good enough on third downs throughout last year, if they can come up with a few key stops early on, they might be able to keep this from being brutally ugly – instead of just ugly.
After leading the FCS in punt return yardage, the season opener is the time to take advantage of a potentially loose coverage team. TCU’s punting game was mediocre last season.
One Reason Why TCU Will Win
The Southern offensive line will be in for a long day.
The Jaguars have a few good talents up front in Jeremiah Abby and Jodeci Harris, but their O line was miserable at allowing plays in the backfield. The pass protection was and should be a bit iffy again, and it struggled at allowing tackles for loss. Now it has to go against a defense that led the Big 12 in sacks.
Get ready for the Horned Frogs to suffocate the Southern offense from the start.
What’s Going To Happen
TCU is more than good enough to get back to the Big 12 Championship, but it needs to replace a whole lot of key parts from last year’s team.
This is the game to do it.
TCU will be able to call its shot against an overmatched team, with the passing game looking great right out of the gate. Even with so many new starters, the offense will do whatever it wants, and the defense won’t allow the Jaguars to do much of anything.
And then the real season can get started.
