Southern Miss (0-0) vs. Jackson State (0-0) Game Preview
There are teams that need to ease their way into the season with as many tune-ups and easy games as possible. Southern Miss has suddenly become one of them.
With the indefinites suspension of the one guy the Golden Eagles couldn’t lose – QB Kwadra Griggs – they need a game without a whole lot of stress.
Thats’s where Jackson State comes in.
The Tigers went 3-8 last season – opening up with a 63-0 loss to TCU – but they should get the offense rolling a bit better with offensive coordinator Hal Mumme stepping in to start bombing away.
But USM needs to put this away without a problem – and get the new quarterbacks going.
One Reason Why Jackson State Will Win
Can JUCO transfer Derrick Ponder get the passing game going? Mumme’s offenses – the Air Raid style – have been hit-or-miss lately across the college football landscape, but anything will be an improvement for an O that finished 121st in the FCS and couldn’t throw the ball a lick.
The Tiger defense was strong last year and it should be just as good this season – especially against the pass – and again, USM is trying to figure out its quarterback situation.
One Reason Why Southern Miss Will Win
The defense should rip apart the new Jackson State offense, at least up front.
The Air Raid style is good at getting the ball out of the quarterbacks’ hands in a hurry, but the Tigers struggled last season – to be nice – at keeping defenses out of the backfield.
The Golden Eagles led all of Conference USA in tackles for loss, and while a whole lot of last year’s parts have to be replaced, the D will generate pressure from everywhere. This group will camp out behind the line.
What’s Going To Happen
The loss of Griggs won’t matter – for now.
Louisiana Tech transfer Jack Abraham is the odds-on favorite to grab the job and make it his over the first part of the season, and the USM offense will look great behind a strong day from the O line.
Jackson State’s defense will be good enough to keep the game from getting out of hand, but USM will take this game over with ease.
