South Carolina (0-0) vs. Coastal Carolina (0-0) Game Preview
You’ll have to forgive South Carolina if it’s going to be a wee bit preoccupied with what’s coming next.
It’s not that Coastal Carolina won’t be feisty or provide a little more than just a light breeze worth of resistance, but with Georgia coming into Columbia the following week. this is about as tune-up as tune-ups get.
The Gamecocks are speeding up the offense a bit and opening things up, and this is the time to get it all going. For Coastal Carolina, it’s the return of head coach Joe Moglia, the architect of the program in its current form, back after missing all of last year with medical issues.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
The Chanticleers won’t have the defensive front to hold up, or the secondary to slow down the advanced Gamecock passing game.
This wasn’t a strong Coastal Carolina defense last year, and now it has to replace six starters and there’s little bulk up front. There should be a solid rotation, but there’s no sure-thing pass rush to count on. For a defense that couldn’t come up with enough turnovers or third down stops, it’s going to have to take a slew of big chances – that’s when the big plays will come.
USC has the weapons to open up the attack and start being more aggressive. Even if it makes a slew of mistakes, the defense is strong enough to clean up the messes.
One Reason Why Coastal Carolina Will Win
There’s a chance Coastal Carolina could out-South Carolina, South Carolina.
Moglia and his coaching staff are terrific, and while they’re going to want to play with pace, in this game it’s about simply moving the chains. With all five starters returning up front, and with a great group of backs and the receivers being the strength of the team, there’s a chance the Chanticleers can control the game at times if they can get a great game out of the O line.
Yes, South Carolina is opening things up offensively, but it’s going to be a work in progress. It’s Week One – things aren’t going to be settled in right away.
What’s Going To Happen
Coastal Carolina will play its tail off and give a South Carolina team fits. This is the team that should’ve beaten Arkansas last year in a heartbreaking 39-38 loss, but that was an aberration – 2018 South Carolina isn’t 2017 Arkansas.
The Gamecocks’ heads will be on Georgia, and there will be a few too many misfires in the first half. A big play from the passing game – welcome back, Deebo Samuel – will finally open things up to put the game well out of reach, but it’ll be a grind to get there.
The USC D will take care of keeping this from ever really getting scary, but this will be the game that shows why you schedule Coastal Carolina before Georgia, and not the other way around.
