Rutgers (0-0) vs. Texas State (0-0) Game Preview
This is the moment when Rutgers has to show that this really is going to be a new team with a new style in a new season.
The Scarlet Knights have the talent and the schedule – even playing in the Big Ten East – to go bowling, but first they have to play well against a Texas State team looking for anything promising to happen early on. With a trip to Ohio State up next – and then the schedule easing up – this is the scrimmage to get ready.
It’s been a rough run at TXST under head coach Everett Withers, but he’s been able to recruit well on a Sun Belt level and there’s experience coming back. With four FBS wins over the last three seasons, anything positive will be a good step before winnable games against Texas Southern and South Alabama are up next.
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
Gone is the slow and stodgy offense that did what it could to keep the team in the game, and in comes a more dangerous attack that’s going to start pressing the passing game a bit more.
The ground game will still be a big deal – Boston College transfer Jon Hilliman leads a terrific rotation of running backs – but against a Bobcat secondary didn’t pick off a pass last season, this is the time to test it all out.
Get up early, and there won’t be a problem. Texas State is going to need a while to find the offensive pop.
One Reason Why Texas State Will Win
That defense might not have come up with an interception, but it’s an experienced group with a whole lot of promise.
This is a physical secondary that can tackle, and there’s quickness among the parts of the front seven in the 3-4 D to swarm around the ball. New defensive coordinator Chris Woods is coming in preaching takeaways and big plays, and if they start to happen against a Rutgers offense trying to figure it all out, this might be interesting.
What’s Going To Happen
Rutgers will look terrific.
Texas State will be much better than it looks in the opener, but the Scarlet Knight attack will be strong early on, take a solid lead, and let the defense take care of the rest.
There will be offensive balance, and for Rutgers fans who didn’t see much of them last year, a few great downfield passes to get excited about.
