CFN Preview 2018

All that matters after all the fun, games and hoo-ha is what the final College Football Playoff rankings will be.

What will the committee come up with on the first weekend of December as it tries to figure out which four teams deserve to be in the tournament?

Records matter. Conference championships matter – sort of. Finishing with one loss or fewer – especially after the last two years – really, really matters.

Remember, the CFP is looking at all the data presented to them – strength of schedule, key wins, and stats – to go along with their own judgement.

The committee meticulously goes through each and every spot to come up with the final rankings, and here’s what they’re going to be.

The predicted regular season record includes predicted conference championship games, but this doesn’t include projected bowls.

130. Liberty Flames

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-9
The Flames will come up with a few wins and should be competitive, but the strength of schedule will be a killer in the rankings. The face Norfolk State and Idaho State from the FCS, and only play two Power Five programs.
– Liberty Preview

129. Rice Owls

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 2-10
The Owls will start to run the ball better and they’ll set the tone for the future with a few okay moments, but wins over Prairie View A&M and UTEP will be the only fun they’ll have.
Rice Preview

128. San Jose State Spartans

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 2-10
The Spartans will get by UC Davis to start the season, they’ll get past Hawaii at home, and that will be about it. There won’t be any miserable losses, but there just won’t be enough wins.
San Jose State Preview

127. Charlotte 49ers

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 2-10
It’ll be too hard to get the season going, beating Fordham to start the season but not getting a second win until late in the year against FIU. The 49ers will be double-digit underdogs in at least ten games.
Charlotte Preview

126. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-9
A few Sun Belt wins will keep the season from being a total disaster, but losing five of the last six games will ruin the ranking. Even so, with head coach Joe Moglia back, it’ll be a step forward of a season – the team will be more competitive.
– Coastal Carolina Preview

125. New Mexico State Aggies

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-9
It’s a bit of a rebuilding season coming off the bowl season, and life as an independent will be tough. The Aggies play Liberty twice and Alcorn State. They’ll be underdogs against everyone else after starting out 0-5.
NMSU Preview

124. Kent State Golden Flashes

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 2-10
If it’s possible, Kent State will be a fun two-win team with an offense that should have its moments. There will be too many close losses until the win over Eastern Michigan in the regular season finale provides a little bit of fun.
Kent State Preview

123. UTEP Miners

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-9
Yes, UTEP will actually win a game this year. It’ll win three. It’ll lose a few winnable games along the way, but new head coach Dana Dimel will do his part after the Miners’ winless campaign. However, they’ll go 1-7 to close.
UTEP Preview

122. Bowling Green Falcons

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 2-10
The problem is the schedule. The Falcons might be better, but they’ll be the underdogs against everyone but Eastern Kentucky and Kent State. They’ll win those two, and that will be it.
Bowling Green Preview

121. New Mexico Lobos

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-9
The disastrous offseason will carry over into a rough season. The offense will be better, but the Lobos will struggle way too much in Mountain West play, losing the last eight games after a 3-1 start.
New Mexico Preview

120. Eastern Michigan Eagles

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-9
It’ll be a maddening season when nothing goes quite right. Wins over Army and Akron at home will be good, but a rough misfire at Ball State will screw up the campaign, and the wheels will come totally off at Kent State in the season finale.
Eastern Michigan Preview

119. Texas State Bobcats

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-9
With midseason wins over Louisiana and Georgia Southern, the Bobcats will start to look like they’re in for a solid season. But the 3-3 start won’t do much for the second half as they’ll lose six straight to drop in the final rankings.
Texas State Preview

118. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 3-10
The offense might be back to the run-and-shoot world, but it won’t be enough to come up with more than a few home wins. There will be a shocker against UNLV, but beating Rice and Duquesne won’t get anyone fired up.
– Hawaii Preview

117. Georgia State Panthers

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 4-8
Despite the bowl season of 2017, the Panthers won’t be able to keep up the momentum as they’ll lose their final three games to finish the season trending downward. There are too many tough games on the road to get to six wins.
Georgia State Preview

116. Ball State Cardinals

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 4-8
A healthier backfield will mean a healthier team, but not be all that much. The Cardinals will get by Kent State, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan for a few good conference moments, but losing four of the last five games will be disastrous.
Ball State Preview

115. Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
With late-season wins over Georgia State and South Alabama, the Ragin’ Cajuns will go through a late-season rush up the rankings – at least a little bit. However, with a bowl on the line, they’ll lose at ULM to end with a thud.
Louisiana Preview

114. UMass Minutemen

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
There might be a few too many tough losses against mediocre teams, but the offense will be a blast and the wins will come late to boost up the final ranking. Winning three of four games before losing at Georgia will help with a big late rush.
UMass Preview

113. FIU Golden Panthers

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
The Golden Panthers will be maddening. They’ll be just good enough to beat good teams like Middle Tennessee and Marshall, but they’ll gack at Charlotte to keep them from going bowling.
FIU Preview

112. UConn Huskies

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 4-8
The Huskies will come up with a few nice wins, but they’ll be spread out. Losing three of the last four games will drop them this low. They won’t beat anyone who’ll finish with a winning record.
UConn Preview

111. East Carolina Pirates

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 4-8
The Pirates will be better and more interesting, but other than a stunning win over Memphis, there won’t be a lot to get excited about. There will be too many losses early to the stronger teams in the AAC.
– East Carolina Preview

110. Tulane Green Wave

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
The offense will start to work a whole lot better, but losing four of the final five games will be the problem, blowing a shot at bowl eligibility with a home loss to Navy. The loss to Tulsa will drag down the final ranking.
Tulane Preview

109. Nevada Wolf Pack

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 4-8
The Air Raid offense will start to work, but the defense won’t be able to get it done early on. Late wins will start to come after the O finds its groove, but it’ll be way too little, too late after a brutal 1-6 start.
– Nevada Preview

108. Kansas Jayhawks

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 2-10
The Jayhawks will have the experience, but they won’t get the results. They’ll get out to a 2-0 start, and then the struggles will come with game after game as double-digit underdogs. They’ll be more competitive, but that won’t be enough.
Kansas Preview

107. Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 4-8
The Golden Hurricane will get off to a 2-1 start, and then things will stall until a few midseason wins save the season from sinking into the abyss. Too many tough road games in the second half of the year will be crushing.
Tulsa Preview

106. Miami University RedHawks

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
Hanging around bowl eligibility all season, MU won’t be able to get over the hump with road losses to Army, Buffalo and NIU over the second half of the season. It’ll win five of its final nine games, but it won’t be enough.
Miami University Preview

105. South Alabama Jaguars

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
With a new coaching staff and just enough good parts to potentially be a factor in the Sun Belt West, the Jaguars will go on a late run to overcome a rough 1-5 start. It won’t be enough to go bowling, but with an upset over Troy and late win over ULM, it’ll be a promising reloading year.
South Alabama Preview

104. Akron Zips

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
Continuing to be the program that does the most – or close to it – with the least – the Zips will have a chance to go bowling with a win in their final regular season game. But they’ll lose to Ohio, closing on a November with losses in three of the final four games.
–  Akron Preview

103. Georgia Southern Eagles

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
The option will giveth; the option will taketh away. There will be times when the Eagles rip through teams, coming up with a 4-1 start with only a loss to Clemson along the way. But the losses will start to mount up over the second half of the year on the road. A win over Georgia State to close will stop the bleeding.
Georgia Southern Preview

102. ULM Warhawks

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
With one of the nation’s most exciting offenses, the Warhawks will get into shootout after shootout – and lose. They’ll rally from the 1-4 start to spread out a few wins, but there won’t be enough to get to six and a bowl bid.
ULM Preview

101. Central Michigan Chippewas

Preseason Predicted Regular Season Record: 5-7
The home loss to Kansas early on will ultimately be the killer. The Chippewas will go through a terrific stretch in the middle of the season with four wins in five games. but a loss to Toledo in the regular season finale will keep them from going bowling.
Central Michigan Preview
