Mississippi State (0-0) vs. Stephen F. Austin (0-0) Game Preview

The Joe Moorhead era kicks off, looking to get the offense going before having to go to Kansas State the following week, and with Kentucky and Florida to deal with before the end of September.

Stephen F. Austin struggled offensively last season, but with so many players getting a shot to try making things go, there’s plenty of experience coming back – technically, 11 starters return – to at least get an okay passing game going again.

But this is merely practice for MSU if everything goes according to plan. This might be as close to a preseason game as it gets, with Moorhead getting a shot to see what he has to work with when the lights are on.

At the very least, if it’s anything other than an easy run for State, there’s a problem.

One Reason Why Stephen F. Austin Will Win

Is it possible for the Lumberjacks to start bombing away early on to stay in the game? Jake Blumrick leads a veteran group of quarterbacks with a slew of veteran targets to work with – spreading the wealth around shouldn’t be a problem.

There was a rotation at QB throughout last season, and while the overall scoring production wasn’t there on a consistent basis, the passing attack averaged 215 yards per game and had a few okay moments.

As long as the quarterbacks get a little time to work, the yards should be there, but …

One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Bulldog defense is loaded.

The focus was on the quarterback situation and the look of the offense under the new coaching staff, but Nick Fitzgerald won’t get the live reps he probably needs, being suspended for the opener for a violation of team rules. The Bulldogs will be fine with Keytaon Thompson, but it would’ve been nice to have had the main man.

It helps to have pass rushers and talent up front like Montez Sweat and Jeffery Simmons, and the secondary might just be the team’s strength – the D will clean up anything the O can’t take care of.

The backups should be involved early on as long as all is fine, and it’ll be the defense that makes it happen with several easy stops. SFA just won’t have the pop.

What’s Going To Happen

The Bulldogs should be able to name their score.

The excitement was about the return Fitzgerald, but that will have to wait. It’ll be the performance of the defense that excites the base.

It’ll be a dominant day from the defensive side.

It shouldn’t be a game after a few drives, with the Bulldog defense dominating after the offensive side gets up early.
