Louisiana Tech (0-0) vs. South Alabama (0-0) Game Preview
Last year’s Louisiana Tech 34-16 win over South Alabama turned out to be a really big deal. The Bulldogs not only needed every win possible to get to six and a bowl game, but it was an oasis in a rough early season slide.
This time around, Skip Holtz has a good enough team to push hard in the Conference USA title chase, but the team has to get through a first month with three road games in the first four dates including a giant trip to North Texas to kick off the conference campaign.
South Alabama is starting out the Steve Campbell era needing a win with a trip to Oklahoma State up next, and just one home game after this until mid-October.
One Reason Why Louisiana Tech Will Win
Offense is always going to be what rules the Louisiana Tech program, but the defensive side might be the best yet under Holtz.
It all starts with a nasty defensive front seven with Jaylon Ferguson possibly the best lineman in the conference, and with a strong group of linebackers to clean everything up in the 4-2-5 alignment.
For a South Alabama offense that needs to prove it can keep defenses out of the backfield. there’s going to be a problem.
One Reason Why South Alabama Will Win
Louisiana Tech’s defense is going to be good, but USA’s is about to be fantastic.
Most of the top tacklers are back to go along with the influx of talent to help the cause, especially at linebacker. As long as the pass rush can improve and be good right away, the solid-looking Jaguar secondary – even without star S Jeremy Reaves around – should be able to hold its own.
What’s Going To Happen
Campbell knows how to win, and he’s got the team in place to come out with a good start against a strong Louisiana Tech team. But the Bulldog defense will keep down the mediocre USA offense.
On the other side, get ready for the Louisiana Tech offense to look the part again after taking 2017 off. It wasn’t bad last season, but now the team is experienced and will be explosive. It’ll all start in Mobile.
