Indiana (0-0) vs. FIU (0-0) Game Preview
Indiana started out its 2016 on a Miami vacation worked its way to a 34-13 win.
But that’s when the Golden Panthers weren’t any good.
In his second season, Butch Davis has to do some work coming off a breakthrough debut. But he’s getting a winnable game against a Big Ten team in his house, and it’a shot to make a gigantic early statement. Win this, and there is no rebuilding – the program will be rolling.
The Hoosiers get three straight home games to follow, but one of them is against Michigan State. There’s no room to lose this game and stay in the hunt for a bowl game – there are too many losable games the rest of the way.
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
The Hoosier offense has the upside and the experience to be far better with just about everyone coming back.
All five starters return, the ground game should be terrific, and there should be more of a passing attack with sophomore Peyton Ramsey expected to make a big jump. Best of all, the receiving corps should be reloaded with just about everyone back – even with the loss of Simmie Cobbs.
FIU couldn’t generate a pass rush last season, and that’s when the defense was relatively loaded. Now, against this veteran offensive line, that pass rush isn’t likely to start happening now.
One Reason Why FIU Will Win
There’s more hope than it appears for the defensive side.
There might be an overhaul defensively, but there are some fantastic parts to play around with. From Fermin Silva in a tweener role on the outside, to Anthony Johnson on the defensive interior, the Golden Panthers have a few defenders who’ll give IU a big problem.
But it might all come down to takeaways.
FIU came up with 13 takeaways in five of the wins last season, and now it’s going against an offense that had nightmare of a time with interception. New team, new parts, new season, but FIU has to force mistakes.
What’s Going To Happen
FIU will be feisty, and it won’t be all doom and gloom considering all the new parts involved.
However, the Indiana offense will be sharper, more explosive, and more effective for a full four quarters. The Golden Panthers will have their opportunities, but they won’t be able to take advantage of enough of them.
The Hoosiers will be ahead from early on, but they’ll pull away in the fourth to make it comfortable.
