4. Rice 31, Prairie View 28
Take the win and move on.
It might not have been pretty, and it might have taken a massive comeback, but for a program that hasn’t enjoyed a whole lot of fun lately, getting a walk-off Jack Fox 23-yard field goal to end a run of 12 unanswered points is fantastic.
It doesn’t matter who it came against.
The Mike Bloomgren era is supposed to be about controlling the clock, pointing out the running game, and keeping the defense off the field. The O held the ball for 39:39, and ground out 310 yards on the ground …
But the defense didn’t do its job until late.
The Owl secondary was hit for 244 yards and three Jalen Morton touchdown passes, but it managed to do a great job on third downs.
But again, it took a massive rally, 173 yards on the ground on 32 carries from 232-pound Emmanuel Esukpa, and a whole lot of work to put away Prairie View.
The Houston passing game should go off next week against the Owls, but Ed Oliver and the D had better be ready.
