It wasn’t exactly the slate of games that got America buzzing, but it was the start of the 2018 college football season. What happened and what mattered from the first four games?
5. UMass 63, Duquesne 15
It’s exactly what the veteran and explosive UMass offense was supposed to do to start the season.
Duquesne wasn’t supposed to have too much of a defense to kick things off, but the Minutemen got everything humming right away with a sharp first quarter and a 21-3 lead and a 56-9 lead after three.
Andrew Ford hit 13-of-19 passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns before coming out for Ross Comis, but it was the running game that was the nice part of the puzzle to balance things out, with Marquis Young taking off for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Andy Isabella did exactly what he was supposed to do to with five grabs for 131 yards and two scores – including a 60-yarder in the first quarter, a 44-yarder in the third, and he even ran for one.
The defense forced four takeaways, and held firm early on with good pressure into the backfield, but it was the offense’s game, with a balanced 290 yards through the air and 282 on the ground.
What’s next? Boston College. The Minutemen will be pounded on, but passing game got its tune-up. It’s going too be dangerous all season long.
