Boise State (0-0) vs. Troy (0-0) Game Preview
There are two games in the big Week 1 between 2017 conference champions – this, and Florida Atlantic vs. Oklahoma.
It’s also a rematch of an interesting opener to last season. Little did anyone know what a big deal that was.
Boise State took down Troy at home, and the Trojans would lose just once more the rest of the way, beating LSU and rolling through the Sun Belt on a way to a conference championship and an 11-2 season.
This time around, the Broncos should be even stronger, but they have to deal with a tough – but rebuilding – Troy team on the road as part of a run of three away games in the first four. Those other two? At Oklahoma State and Wyoming, and that’s before dealing with San Diego State.
Troy has to go to Nebraska in a few weeks, but if it wins this, look out. It could and should be 2017 all over again record-wise.
One Reason Why Boise State Will Win
Troy might have a brilliant head coach in Neal Brown, and it might have a slew of great talents returning, but first, it has to welcome in a new starting quarterback.
Boise State’s defense is about to go off.
In last year’s game, Boise State held Troy to 215 yards of total offense, and now it’s even better.
The Broncos were great defensively last season, and they should be even better this year with 17 of the top 18 tacklers back. With an offense that gets back QB Brett Rypien and should have a strong running game, it’s all there for the defending Mountain West champs to handle the road trip.
One Reason Why Troy Will Win
Troy’s offense will be fine in time, but the defense should be good enough to keep the team in the game. At the very least, the pass rush should be able to get to Rypien.
The Boise State offensive front might be good, but the receiving corps needs to find some new stars and the passing game might take a little bit before it starts to find a groove.
The Trojan secondary will be among the Sun Belt’s best – or close to it behind Appalachian State’s defensive backs – and five of the top seven pass rushers return.
What’s Going To Happen
Troy is going to be fantastic again, and it should get to the final weekend of the regular season with a shot at going to the Sun Belt title game. But it’s rebuilding a bit too much, and Boise State isn’t.
This should be a bit more wide-open and a bit more offensive than last year’s game that saw a combined 37 points, but the defenses will control the action. This is where Boise State will make an early statement that it’ll be deep in the hunt for a New Year’s Six game with a tough, but efficient win.
