25. Virginia Tech Hokies

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 78.829
2017 Ranking:
 13
Biggest Positive:
19 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
 58% Conference Wins
Analysis:
Sort of surprisingly, the ACC winning rate is just okay – there were a slew of losses before Justin Fuente took over. But that’s changing. The 19 Quality Wins are good, and getting 17 players drafted is great. From the Draft Score, to the APR, to the 6.24 Attendance Score, there are a whole lot of good numbers.

24. Louisville Cardinals

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 81.05
2017 Ranking:
 31
Biggest Positive:
10.5 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 16 Quality Wins
Analysis:
Bobby Petrino is doing a fantastic job. The Cardinals have won 70% of their ACC games, and the 21 players drafted are the most by anyone outside of the top 13. The 42 FBS wins are good, but there were a whole lot of easy ones. You can only beat who’s on the slate.

23. Ole Miss Rebels

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 81.171
2017 Ranking:
 26
Biggest Positive:
21 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
 48% Conference Wins
Analysis:
It doesn’t seem like the numbers add up to this ranking, but they do. And why? A massive 4.5 Elite Win Score that keeps the program out of the 40s. Those, along with the 21 Quality Wins, made it a strong run under Hugh Freeze before it all went weird.

22. Washington Huskies

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 81.968
2017 Ranking:
 30
Biggest Positive:
9 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 62% Conference Wins
Analysis:
Thank Chris Petersen for the last few years to take the program up to a whole other level. The 41 FBS wins are great, and the 9.776 APR Score  is good, but getting 18 players drafted and were a big, big boost to get the Huskies out of the 30s.

21. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 83.295
2017 Ranking:
 25
Biggest Positive:
 43 FBS wins
Biggest Negative:
 9.466 APR Score
Analysis:
Mike Gundy has won a whole lot of games. The 43 FBS wins are the most by anyone outside of the top 15, and the 20 Quality Wins are impressive. Taking down 70% of the Big 12 games doesn’t hurt, either. However, the one strange quirk in the rankings is the Draft Score. It’s just 4.5 – nine Cowboys have been drafted over the last five years. It seems like there should’ve been a whole lot more.

20. Oregon Ducks

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 83.516
2017 Ranking:
 12
Biggest Positive:
5 Elite Win Score
Biggest Negative:
 5.72 Attendance Score
Analysis:
Even with a dud of a 4-8 2016 season and a mediocre 7-6 2017 run, the Ducks are still in the top 20 thanks to the 22 FBS wins in 2013 and 2014. But the Attendance Score is always going to be just okay, and the last two seasons hurt the conference winning clip – now it’s just 62%. the 19 Quality Wins are the big boost to keep them in the top 20.

19. Florida Gators

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 84.337
2017 Ranking:
 11
Biggest Positive:
16 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 58% Conference Wins
Analysis:
When you send 32 players to the NFL Draft in five years, and you have a 9.752 APR Score, and you go to two SEC Championships, the score will be good enough to overcome a rocky run like the Gators had in 2017. The 12 Quality Wins are too few, and the Bad Loss to Georgia Southern in 2013 is a drag. That will all change after this season.

18. Michigan Wolverines

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 84.915
2017 Ranking:
 18
Biggest Positive:
 10.97 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
 57% Conference Wins
Analysis:
Dog Jim Harbaugh all you want for the struggles against the big boys, but the fans are back, the interest is back, and the program is back to doing some big things. The Attendance Score makes up for the 12 Quality Wins – ties for the lowest among the top 49 programs. The 9.874 APR Score is fantastic, and getting 22 players drafted is impressive.

17. Miami Hurricanes

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 86.211
2017 Ranking:
 28
Biggest Positive:
13 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 5.42 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The 26 players selected by the NFL over the last five years helped boost up a few other mediocre areas. For all of the issues before Mark Richt took over, the Canes still have 20 Quality Wins and have won 63% of their ACC games. It’s all only going to get better.
Miami 2018 Team Preview

16. UCLA Bruins

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 87.989
2017 Ranking:
 14
Biggest Positive:
13 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 51% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The program just wasn’t all that bad under Jim Mora Jr. The best thing he was able to do was recruit and develop NFL talent, with 26 players going into the NFL Draft over the last five seasons. There weren’t enough Pac-12 wins, though, even with the solid 19 Quality Wins.
UCLA 2018 Team Preview

15. Boise State Broncos

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 88.907
2017 Ranking:
 19
Biggest Positive:
78% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
 3.32 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The Broncos keep on rolling, earning the honor of being the highest-ranked Group of Five program with 48 FBS wins – only the top six ranked teams overall have more. The 9.812 APR Score is great, and the 22 Quality Wins are nice. Winning all of those Mountain West games is what got them into the top 15.
Boise State 2018 Team Preview

14. Penn State Nittany Lions

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 92.833
2017 Ranking:
 22
Biggest Positive:
10.10 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
 17 Quality Wins
Analysis:
Bill O’Brien was able to keep the program afloat, and now James Franklin has taken it to another level. There are only 17 Quality Wins – the fewest among the top 17 – and the 18 players drafted are the fewest among the top 14. Whatever – the Nittany Lions are flying up the rankings.
Penn State 2018 Team Preview

13. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 94.081
2017 Ranking:
 8
Biggest Positive:
23 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
1.5 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
Michigan State 36, Notre Dame 28. That Bad Loss in 2016 isn’t the only thing keeping the Irish out of the top ten – Florida is the only other team in the top 31 to have a bad home loss – but it hurts. For all the concerns and issues from a 4-8 season two years ago, the program still has 41 FBS wins over the last five years with 22 players getting drafted.
Notre Dame 2018 Team Preview

12. LSU Tigers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 97.523
2017 Ranking:
 7
Biggest Positive:
16.5 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 9.498 APR Score
Analysis:
The program might be slipping from the ranks of the elite of the elite, but it’s still cranking out the NFL talent with 33 players taken by the NFL. The 9.9 Attendance Score is still amazing, but the 20 Quality Wins are the fewest by anyone in the top 13.
LSU 2018 Team Preview

11. Auburn Tigers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 97.805
2017 Ranking:
 21
Biggest Positive:
24 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
 63% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The Tigers made a big jump up after an excellent 2017 season- going to an SEC title game helped the conference winning percentage. The 4.5 Elite Win Score is great – beating Georgia and Alabama helped that – and getting 20 players drafted isn’t bad.
