50. West Virginia Mountaineers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 62.509
2017 Ranking:
 50
Biggest Positive:
 7 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
51% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The Mountaineers haven’t been awful, but they’ve been a middle-of-the-pack program in the Big 12. It shows in these rankings. They only won just over half of their conference games, and the 9.438 APR Score stinks. But the 31 FBS wins aren’t bad.

49. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 63.207
2017 Ranking:
 52
Biggest Positive:
 9.808 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 43% Conference Wins
Analysis:
Minnesota has won a lot of non-conference games with 33 overall against FBS teams, but it has only won 43% of its Big Ten teams. The APR Score is great, and the 12 Quality Wins are solid, but the program has to start winning more against the B1G.

48. Northwestern Wildcats

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 63.348
2017 Ranking:
 54
Biggest Positive:
 9.934 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 3.64 Attendance Score
Analysis:
Northwestern will always have a low Attendance Score, but the Wildcats have managed to win 53% of their Big Ten games and have 34 FBS wins in all. As always, the APR Score is phenomenal.
Northwestern 2018 Team Preview

47. Pitt Panthers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 63.661
2017 Ranking:
 43
Biggest Positive:
 9.706 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 30 FBS Wins
Analysis:
It’s not like the talent hasn’t been there. The Panthers have sent 13 players to the NFL, but the 30 wins over FBS teams are the second-lowest by anyone in the top 50. Winning just 53% of the ACC games isn’t getting it done.
Pitt 2018 Team Preview

46. Kansas State Wildcats

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 64.084
2017 Ranking:
 33
Biggest Positive:
36 FBS Wins
Biggest Negative:
 58% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The Wildcats have won plenty of games compared to most in the bottom 90, but not enough of them have been in Big 12 games. K-State has an okay Attendance Score of 5.25, and the 9.756 APR is fine, but going forward, it has to win more conference battles.

45. San Diego State Aztecs

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 65.799
2017 Ranking:
 47
Biggest Positive:
 78% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
 3.43 Attendance Score
Analysis:
With 42 wins over FBS teams, the Aztecs are tied for the most outside of the top 21. So why aren’t they higher? The Attendance Score is low, and the bad loss to Eastern Illinois to open up the 2013 season keeps them from being in the 30s – where they’ll probably be next year.
San Diego State 2018 Team Preview

44. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 66.422
2017 Ranking:
 39
Biggest Positive:
 9.822 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 29 FBS Wins
Analysis:
This is surprisingly high for a program that won just 29 games over FBS teams. So how did it happen? How is the program here? Easy – 17 of those are Quality Wins; tied for the most by anyone outside of the top 30. The APR is great, but those Quality Wins – and the Elite Wins over Georgia and Mississippi State in 2014 – were the difference.

43. Navy Midshipmen

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 67.46
2017 Ranking:
 48
Biggest Positive:
70% Conference Wins (the 2013 & 2014 total seasons as an Independent are factored in)
Biggest Negative:
 1 Draft Score
Analysis:
There’s a whole lot to like, from winning 70% of the conference games, to the 9.82 APR Score, to the 40 FBS wins. Getting two players drafted – QB Keenan Reynolds and C Joe Cardona – at least give the program something there.

42. North Carolina Tar Heels

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 67.662
2017 Ranking:
 29
Biggest Positive:
 7 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 55% Conference Score
Analysis:
The 2017 clunker of a campaign dragged the team down. Now the Tar Heels have to start winning more ACC games, and they need more wins, period. The 31 FBS wins are way low, but getting 14 players drafted helps. The 9.482 APR Score stinks.
North Carolina 2018 Team Preview

41. Toledo Rockets

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 68.023
2017 Ranking:
 42
Biggest Positive:
 42 FBS wins
Biggest Negative:
2.00 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The highest-ranked MAC team, just four other Group of Five programs are ranked higher. The 16 Quality Wins help, and 9.748 APR Score is great, and winning 78% of MAC games is amazing. But the Attendance Score is always going to be a drag.
Toledo 2018 Team Preview

40. Texas Longhorns

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 68.415
2017 Ranking:
 35
Biggest Positive:
9.48 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
 53% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The program is bound by absolutely nothing, and yet it has barely won half of its conference games over the last five seasons. Winning just 31 FBS games doesn’t work – it’s TEXAS – and the 5.5 Draft Score is too low. However, the Attendance Score is massive.

39. UCF Knights

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 69.427
2017 Ranking:
 55
Biggest Positive:
9.812 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 3.44 Attendance Score
Analysis:
It’s amazing that the program has an 0-12 2015 season on the books, and yet it’s still this high. That’s what happens when you go 13-0 in 2017 and 12-1 in 2013. The great APR and winning 68& of conference games  helped overcome the clunker.
UCF 2018 Team Preview

38. WKU Hilltoppers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 71.438
2017 Ranking:
 34
Biggest Positive:
 69% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
 1.72 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The quiet powerhouse, the Hilltoppers are slammed by a low Attendance Score, but the 42 FBS wins are fantastic and winning 69% of conference games is amazing. However, the Attendance Score is a disaster – the Hilltoppers lose more than eight points here to Tennessee.

37. South Carolina Gamecocks

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 72.376
2017 Ranking:
 24
Biggest Positive:
 7.96 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
 45% Conference Wins
Analysis:
It’s being turned around, but a few clunker seasons screwed up the Gamecocks with the fewest FBS wins – 32 among the top 39 teams. But the fans always show up, and the 9.716 APR is tremendous. Now there have to be more SEC wins.

36. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 72.62
2017 Ranking:
 24
Biggest Positive:
 9.04 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
 52% Conference Wins
Analysis:
As bad as things have been for a powerhouse program like Nebraska, they’re not that awful considering the lack of wins. Struggling to take down half of the Big Ten games is the big problem, but the fans are always there, and the 9.806 APR is outstanding.
Nebraska 2018 Team Preview

35. Houston Cougars

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 72.765
2017 Ranking:
 44
Biggest Positive:
 5.5 Elite Win Score
Biggest Negative:
 9.43 APR Score
Analysis:
The program has been strong through a few difference coaches, winning 68% of its conference games, and with the 5.5 Elite Win Score the best out of anyone outside of the top five. The 3.16 Attendance Score stinks, and the APR is awful, but there are a whole lot of wins – 41 against FBS teams.
Houston 2018 Team Preview

34. Baylor Bears

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 72.824
2017 Ranking:
 17
Biggest Positive:
36 FBS Wins
Biggest Negative:
4.57 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The production and wins under Art Briles were enough to overcome the last two clunker seasons, but this is about to change quickly if Matt Rhule doesn’t come up with a big 2018. The Bears have an Elite Win Score of 5, and the 9.676 APR score isn’t bad, but the wins have to be there this year or the Bears are going to be in the 50s – at best.
Baylor 2018 Team Preview

33. Utah Utes

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 73.111
2017 Ranking:
 38
Biggest Positive:
9.784 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 47% Conference Wins
Analysis:
This should go up fast when the lousy 5-7 2013 season doesn’t count in next year’s rankings. That screwed up the Pac-12 winning percentage, and the 36 FBS wins overall are just pedestrian. However, the APR is great and getting 16 players drafted is a huge help.
Utah 2018 Team Preview

32. Iowa Hawkeyes

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 73.697
2017 Ranking:
 46
Biggest Positive:
64% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
 3 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
Iowa has been solid enough to move up into the high 30s, but it could do a whole lot more. The 40 FBS wins are good, and the 6.68 Attendance Score is fine, but the home loss to Iowa State in 2014 and loss to North Dakota State in 2016 are killers. The Hawkeyes would be well into the top 25 if they won those.
Iowa 2018 Team Preview

31. Tennessee Volunteers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 74.054
2017 Ranking:
 32
Biggest Positive:
9.85 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
 40% Conference Wins
Analysis:
How amazing is it that Tennessee is this high despite winning just 40% of its SEC games? It’s not like the Draft Score – 6 – is helping all that much, and the 29 FBS wins are the fewest by far of anyone in the top 43. But that Attendance Score comes down like a hammer, and the 17 Quality Wins help.
Tennessee 2018 Team Preview

30. TCU Horned Frogs

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 75.084
2017 Ranking:
 41
Biggest Positive:
 62% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
 9.472 APR Score
Analysis:
There are just enough Big 12 wins to boost up the overall score to be on the verge of the top 25. The 4.49 Attendance Score is always a bit low, but winning 39 FBS games helps, and the 17 Quality Wins are strong.
TCU 2018 Team Preview

29. Arizona State Sun Devils

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 75.59
2017 Ranking:
 36
Biggest Positive:
 21 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
 57% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The Sun Devils have only won 34 FBS games over the last five years, but they’ve done their part against a whole lot of good teams, with a whopping 21 Quality Wins. No one outside of the top 15 has more. Now it’s up to Herm Edwards to help the program start winning more Pac-12 games.
Arizona State 2018 Team Preview

28. Missouri Tigers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 76.487
2017 Ranking:
 27
Biggest Positive:
9.752 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 53% Conference Wins
Analysis:
Lost in the mediocrity of the last few years was how Mizzou went to two straight SEC title games. However, the 2013 run won’t count in next year’s rankings. Getting 15 players drafted is a huge boost, and the 19 Quality Wins are a huge help. But the Tigers have to start winning more SEC games in a hurry.
Missouri 2018 Team Preview

27. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 76.63
2017 Ranking:
 37
Biggest Positive:
36 FBS Wins
Biggest Negative:
 50% Conference Wins
Analysis:
This is a very, very nice ranking for a program that’s only won half of its conference games. Getting 14 players drafted helps, and 9.73 APR is great, but the 18 Quality Wins and the 36 FBS wins overall – the non-conference slates have helped – are the big keys.
Mississippi State 2018 Team Preview

26. Texas A&M Aggies

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 78,829
2017 Ranking:
 15
Biggest Positive:
9.93 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
48% Conference Wins
Analysis:
You put close to 100,000 butts in the seats, and that erases a whole lot of problems. It also helps pay for a national championship head coach to be your guy for the next ten years. However, winning fewer than half of the SEC games hurts, and the big 2012 season isn’t a part of the equation anymore.
