75. Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 46.642
2017 Ranking:
 79
Biggest Positive:
32 FBS Wins
Biggest Negative:
1.72 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The Blue Raiders have won. The 32 FBS wins are tied for the most among anyone outside of the top 66, the 9.772 APR Score is great, and winning 65% of conference games is amazing. However, there aren’t enough wins over great teams, and the Attendance and Draft (1.5) Scores are a drag.

74. Troy Trojans

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 47.064
2017 Ranking:
91
Biggest Positive:
10 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
9.434 APR Score
Analysis:
The Trojans are only going to keep going up the rankings under head man Neal Brown, winning 19 games against FBS teams over the last two seasons. The APR stinks, and only one player has been drafted, but the wins are solving everything.

73. Maryland Terrapins

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 47.53
2017 Ranking:
 81
Biggest Positive:
9.73 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
31% Conference Wins
Analysis:
Forgetting the turmoil around the program for the moment, there are some good parts. The APR Score is great, and getting eight players drafted helps, but the Attendance Score is a low – for the Big Ten – 4.24 – and only winning 31% of games in league play stinks.

72. USF Bulls

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 47.722
2017 Ranking:
 87
Biggest Positive:
31 FBS Wins
Biggest Negative:
4 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
It’s playing more and more like a big-time program that should be in a Power Five conference – hello, Big 12. The Attendance Score of 3.22, though, is the issue when it comes to that. Winning 60% of conference games will only go up over the next few seasons, and the 31 FBS wins are good.

71. Temple Owls

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 49.429
2017 Ranking:
80
Biggest Positive:
9.714 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
5.5 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
This used to be one of the bottom-feeders in these rankings – it’s bene a remarkable turnaround. The Owls are crushing the APR, but the 2.89 Attendance Score and the Bad Losses are keeping them from rising up.
Temple 2018 Team Preview

70. Air Force Falcons

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 49.772
2017 Ranking:
 66
Biggest Positive:
11 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
50% Conference Wins
Analysis:
As expected, the amazing 9.862 APR is a big help, and the 11 Quality Wins are fantastic. However, the Attendance Score is just 2.91, and winning half of the Mountain West games over the last five years isn’t anything great. The Draft Score is always going to be a problem.
Air Force 2018 Team Preview

69. Ohio Bobcats

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 49.786
2017 Ranking:
67
Biggest Positive:
33 FBS Wins
Biggest Negative:
 2.06 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The 60% MAC winning clip was sort of surprising – it seems like it should be higher. Getting just four players drafted doesn’t help the lousy Attendance Score, but keep on winning, and the program will keep hanging around the middle of the rankings.

68. Arkansas State Red Wolves

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 49.981
2017 Ranking:
 56
Biggest Positive:
80% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
3.5 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
The Sun Belt powerhouse has come up with a terrific 35 FBS wins over the last five years – the most by anyone outside of the top 57 – but the 3.5 Bad Loss Score and getting just one player drafted are big issues. The APR could be better, and the 2.39 Attendance Score will always be a rough part of the equation.

67. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 50.49
2017 Ranking:
 57
Biggest Positive:
5.73 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
36% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The program is trending the wrong way. And why? It’s not winning Big 12 games. The Attendance Score is fine, and getting eight players drafted is fine, but the 9.4 APR is a disaster, and the 25 FBS wins aren’t enough.
Texas Tech 2018 Team Preview

66. Fresno State Bulldogs

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 50.647
2017 Ranking:
69
Biggest Positive:
Ten Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
9.482 APR Score
Analysis:
Here’s the problem. 2017 might have been a great rebound season, but next year, the 11-2 2013 campaign won’t count anymore in the rankings. There were plenty of Quality Wins, and there are just enough other parts that add up to an okay ranking.
Fresno State 2018 Team Preview

65. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 51.764
2017 Ranking:
57
Biggest Positive:
65% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
9.404 APR Score
Analysis:
This has been a nice Conference USA program over the last several years. It’s winning plenty of league games, and it’s even getting players drafted – with nine being selected. The APR Score is awful, and the 2.21 Attendance Score stinks, but with 34 FBS wins, the production on the field is there.
Louisiana Tech 2018 Team Preview

64. Utah State Aggies

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 51.937
2017 Ranking:
51
Biggest Positive:
9.772 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
2.09 Attendance Score
Analysis:
The Aggies are going to class. The APR score is great and the 29 wins are strong, but the Attendance Score is lousy. Winning 58% of Mountain West games is okay, and there aren’t any Bad Losses, but the program needs a big 2018 to boost back up.
Utah State 2018 Team Preview

63. Duke Blue Devils

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 52.381
2017 Ranking:
58
Biggest Positive:
9.926 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
3 Drafted Players
Analysis:
Obviously, the top APR score is going to make everything look good, and winning close to half of the ACC games is surprisingly good. However, just three players have been drafted, and the 2.73 Attendance Score is always going to be a stinger for a Power Five program.
Duke 2018 Team Preview

62. Colorado State Rams

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 52.554
2017 Ranking:
68
Biggest Positive:
65% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
5.75 Bad Win Score
Analysis:
The Rams have won a whole lot of Mountain West games. They won 34 FBS games in all, have had seven players drafted, and for the most part, are taking care of the wins against the teams they’re supposed to beat. The 2.6 Attendance Score should boost up.
Colorado State 2018 Team Preview

61. Appalachian State Mountaineers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 53.061
2017 Ranking:
86
Biggest Positive:
78% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
2.43 Attendance Score
Analysis:
When you win 78% of your conference games, a lot of other good things come from it. The Attendance Score will always be a barrier, and getting just two players drafted doesn’t help, but winning 35 games cranked up the ranking in a big way.
Appalachian State 2018 Team Preview

60. Western Michigan Broncos

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 53.061
2017 Ranking:
71
Biggest Positive:
63% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
 3.5 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
The 1.84 Attendance Score is painfully low, but the Broncos have had eight players drafted over the last five years and the wins are coming. Next year the 1-11 2013 season doesn’t count in the rankings anymore, and that takes away the 2.5 of the Bad Loss Score.
Western Michigan 2018 Team Preview

59. Boston College Eagles

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 54.72
2017 Ranking:
 85
Biggest Positive:
9.8 APR Score
Biggest Negative:
 35% Conference Wins
Analysis:
The program that couldn’t seem to buy an ACC win is getting a whole lot better. The uptick in wins over the last few seasons have obviously made a huge difference, but it’ll take a few years to get the 3-9 2015 season off the books.
Boston College 2018 Team Preview

58. BYU Cougars

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 57.151
2017 Ranking:
49
Biggest Positive:
5.83 Attendance Score
Biggest Negative:
 9.48 APR Score
Analysis:
This is about to plummet fast unless there’s a massive rebound season. The lack of Quality Wins – just 11 aren’t great, but getting just four players drafted is worse. It’s all about the wins for an Independent, and the Cougars have just 25 of them against FBS teams over the last five seasons.
BYU 2018 Team Preview

57. Northern Illinois Huskies

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 57.52
2017 Ranking:
45
Biggest Positive:
80% Conference Wins
Biggest Negative:
1.41 Attendance Score
Analysis:
If you’re looking for why NIU is having a hard time moving conferences, it’s that 1.41 Attendance Score. However, the 40 FBS wins are amazing and the production in MAC play is phenomenal. The 9.7 APR Score isn’t bad, either.
Northern Illinois 2018 Team Preview

56. Washington State Cougars

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 58.452
2017 Ranking:
76
Biggest Positive:
14 Quality Wins
Biggest Negative:
 3 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
There are some good parts to the Wazzu puzzle under Mike Leach – seven players were drafted, the 14 Quality Wins are great – but there are a few Bad Losses and the 3.06 Attendance Score is low.
Washington State 2018 Team Preview

55. NC State Wolfpack

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 59.555
2017 Ranking:
61
Biggest Positive:
7 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
 38% Conference Wins
Analysis:
If this seems shockingly low, it’s because of a 3-9 2013 season when the Wolfpack went 0-fer in ACC play. With a good 2018, all of a sudden, the ranking will fly up fast. The 14 players drafted – 7 Draft Score – is strong, and the 5.58 Attendance Score helps.
NC State 2018 Team Preview

54. Marshall Thundering Herd

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 60.01
2017 Ranking:
 59
Biggest Positive:
40 FBS Wins
Biggest Negative:
2.5 Attendance Score
Analysis:
Even with a few subpar years, winning 65% of conference games and taking down 40 victories over FBS teams overcame some other issues. There aren’t any Bad Losses, but the 2.5 Attendance Score is a bit of an anchor.
Marshall 2018 Team Preview

53. Memphis Tigers

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 60.309
2017 Ranking:
 64
Biggest Positive:
63% Conference Score
Biggest Negative:
 2.5 Bad Loss Score
Analysis:
The Tigers are going to fly up the charts next year when the 2013 3-9 season doesn’t matter anymore. Then, the home loss to Temple and road loss to UConn – both Bad Losses – will be erased, and if all goes well, MU should be up in the low 30s.
Memphis 2018 Team Preview

52. Arkansas Razorbacks

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 61.621
2017 Ranking:
53
Biggest Positive:
10 Draft Score
Biggest Negative:
28% Conference Wins
Analysis:
Normally, when a program is strong enough to send 20 players off to the NFL, the wins are there. Not with the Hogs. The 24 wins over FBS teams were the fewest by anyone in the top 72 – by a lot. The 6.56 Attendance Score and the Draft Score are the saving graces.
Arkansas 2018 Team Preview

51. Arizona Wildcats

Five-Year Program Analysis Score: 62.308
2017 Ranking:
 40
Biggest Positive:
2.5 Elite Win Score
Biggest Negative:
3 Draft Score
Analysis:
Thank you, Oregon. The Wildcats won in Eugene in 2014, and at home against the Ducks in 2013. That’s enough to a 2.5 Elite Win Score, and it was the boost to overcome a few other issues. The 31 FBS wins are nice, but getting just six players drafted is low for a program of this caliber.
