Because of what’s left on the schedule, lose in South Bend in the season opener, and it’s We Have A Lovely Parting Gift time when it comes to College Football Playoff hopes and dreams.
When we last saw the two legendary programs go at it, Notre Dame came away with a brutal 31-0 home win in 2014 as a low point in the 5-7 season. But it was a step back to get Jim Harbaugh for the following campaign.
The Wolverine run defense that allowed just 121 yards per game has to be every bit as nasty to kick things off against an explosive Irish ground game that will be bring the speed and pop.
Win, and with Western Michigan, SMU, Nebraska, at Northwestern, and Maryland up next, there’s no excuse to not be 6-0 to start the season before hosting Wisconsin.
