The Right Play

Marshall: Florida Atlantic should be even better than it was last season – at least in terms of experience and familiarity – but the 10/11 odds aren’t worth it. That’s where Marshall comes in. The Thundering Herd get the Owls in Huntington with a strong enough team to pull off the win and take the East. There might be some decent teams in the West, but the East champ should take the league. At 7/2, there’s a wee bit of value compared to FAU.

The Best Value

UTSA: The offense is fine, the defense a killer, and the motivation is there after missing out on a bowl game last season despite finishing with a winning record. Best of all, the Roadrunners miss Florida Atlantic from the East. Getting North Texas and Louisiana Tech at home is massive. Win those two, and the 35/1 odds will look fantastic.

Stay Away From …

FIU: It’ll seem so, so tempting to take a flier at the 100/1 odds on a team that made such great strides last season under Butch Davis, but … nahhhh. The offense still won’t be anything great, and there’s rebuilding to do. Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee and Marshall are home dates, but that won’t be enough to get through the East, much less take down the league.

The Top Longshot

WKU: At 80/1, this is too good a shot not to take. Granted, the Hilltoppers are in the tougher East, and they have to go to Middle Tennessee, Florida Atlantic and Louisiana Tech in November, but the passing game is going to be fantastic. The program isn’t all that far removed from being a league powerhouse, and it won’t take too much tweaking to get close again. More than anything, again, it’s about the odds. They’re just too strong to ignore.
