This is NOT a prediction of how the teams will finish. They’re the rankings of how good the teams are going into the season.

Please scroll down for the MAC rankings done by total conference, ranking 1 through 12.

MAC Rankings: East

1. Buffalo Bulls

2018 Buffalo Preview

Should be ranked here because … the Bulls have some of the team’s top playmakers to work around, and the gaps get filled in from there. LB Khalil Hodge, QB Tyree Jackson, and WR Anthony Johnson might just be the league’s three best players. The defensive back seven will be nasty.

Should be ranked lower because … the special teams aren’t that special, and the defensive line is a bit light. The other parts of the overall puzzle are good enough to overcome the concerns, but injuries can’t hit the main men.

2. Ohio Bobcats

2018 Ohio Preview

Should be ranked higher because … from top to bottom, everything is there to be the MAC’s best team – especially on offense. The running game should be unstoppable.

Should be ranked lower because … the defensive front seven has to undergo a bit of an overhaul. There’s the pass rush going to come from? The linebacking corps will need a little time.

3. Miami University RedHawks

2018 Miami University Preview

Should be ranked higher because … the passing game should be enough to overcome everything else. Between Gus Ragland and Alex Malzone, the quarterbacks are great, and James Gardner is one of the league’s best receivers.

Should be ranked lower because … the secondary is missing sure-thing stars, and the defensive front doesn’t have the tackles. The defense will be more than fine most of the time, but that’s because of the linebacking corps.

4. Akron Zips

2018 Akron Preview

Should be ranked higher because … the defending MAC East champs have plenty of good parts to shock and do it all again. The defensive back seven will keep the team in almost every game.

Should be ranked lower because … the offense still doesn’t have the pop to do more. The line isn’t good enough, and there aren’t enough strong playmakers to carry the team if the D isn’t getting the job done.

5. Bowling Green Falcons

2018 Bowling Green Preview

Should be ranked higher because … and here comes the passing game again. It might not have been up to speed over the last few years, but QB Jarret Doege and WR Scott Miller will crank it up.

Should be ranked here because … the defensive line isn’t going to be a plus, and the offensive front won’t be much better. David Konowalski is one of the league’s best defensive linemen, but there aren’t more of him.

6. Kent State Golden Flashes

2018 Kent State Preview

Should be ranked higher because … the offense will now be “FlashFast” under new head coach Sean Lewis. After years of good D, no O, now there’s hope to finally start moving the ball. Auburn transfer QB Woody Barnett should make a huge difference.

Should be ranked here because … going faster might just mean the offense gets off the field faster. It’s going to take a while for this all to work, and the line isn’t in place to make it all happen.

MAC Rankings: West

This is NOT a prediction of how the teams will finish. They’re the rankings of how good the teams are going into the season.

Please scroll down for the MAC Conference rankings done by total conference, ranking 1 through 12.

1. Toledo Rockets

2018 Toledo Preview

Should be ranked here because … the wide receivers should be unstoppable. Led by Diontae Johnson and Cody Thompson, the corps might be just the best unit of any in the MAC. That, the O line, and the secondary should be enough to be push hard to repeat as conference champs.

Should be ranked lower because … losing QB Logan Woodside matters. The defensive front seven will take a step back for a Rocket team that has to get used to shootouts. The receivers are there, but the quarterback play has to be solid.

2. Northern Illinois Huskies

2018 Northern Illinois Preview

Should be ranked higher because … the lines are the best in the conference. With pass rushing terror Sutton Smith back for the defensive side, and Max Scharping and Jordan Steckler on the offensive front, the infrastructure is great.

Should be ranked lower because … the quarterback situation is fine as long as Marcus Childers stays healthy, but the rest of the skill spots are lacking. The defensive back seven needs some reworking.

3. Western Michigan Broncos

2018 Western Michigan Preview

Should be ranked higher because … the offense is up there with the best in the conference. QB Jon Wassink and the great group of running backs gives the Broncos a strong backfield, and the line is sound.

Should be ranked lower because … the defensive front seven will be a work in progress. There’s hope for the secondary, and the defensive ends are okay, but if the offense isn’t blowing up, it’s uh-oh time.

4. Central Michigan Chippewas

2018 Central Michigan Preview

Should be ranked higher because … there are enough good pieces returning to be almost as good as last season. The linebacking corps is outstanding, and the offensive line will be as good as any in the West.

Should be ranked lower because … the receiving corps is about to take a big step back. On the other side, the secondary loses too much to overcome what should be a wee bit of a concern over the pass rush.

5. Ball State Cardinals

2018 Ball State Preview

Should be ranked higher because … the hope is for everyone to be healthy. The disaster of last season came because of the injuries, but RB Justin Gilbert and QB Riley Neal are back. As long as everyone is right, the O will rock.

Should be ranked higher because … the defensive front is going to struggle. The tackle situation is iffy, and while the linebackers will put up the stats, the talent is just okay.

6. Eastern Michigan Eagles

2018 Eastern Michigan Preview

Should be ranked higher because … the defense should be good enough to win with. The ends and safeties should be forces, and on the other side, the line should be a major plus, but …

Should be ranked here because … the offensive pop won’t be there. The running game isn’t going to be anything great, and the passing game doesn’t have enough to make anyone worry.
