2. Look The Part
Ladies and gentlemen, Exhibit A: 2017 Alabama.
For the entire regular season, Alabama was just okay.
It played a mediocre schedule, it struggled against Mississippi State, didn’t really wake up against Texas A&M, and in the end, it lost to Auburn and didn’t even win it’s own division.
But thanks to a late Ohio State defensive stop against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship, the Crimson Tide got into the College Football Playoff on the “Because It’s Alabama” provision – no chance any other team in the SEC catches the same break under the same circumstances – and the rest is history.
Looking back at 2015 Ohio State again, that team might have had a case to get into the CFP despite the one loss to Michigan State, but it just didn’t look or play right. Had that defending national champion crushed and killed everything in its path and had one off day, it could’ve and should’ve been in on the Four Best Team theory.
Georgia has to look like one of the four best teams all year.
And that means it has to be merciless against Missouri and destructive against Tennessee. It has to rip apart Florida – again – and destroy Auburn in the regular season grudge match/rematch, even if that was already sort of settled in the 2017 SEC Championship.
There will be a loss along the way. Whether its early at South Carolina, in the middle at LSU, or on the wrong day against the Georgia Tech option or in the SEC title game, there’s bound to be a misfire somewhere.
Look the part of the type of team that has to be in the College Football Playoff to make it legit, and everything else will be fine. Or …
