Yeah, yeah, yeah, and give it the old college try, and trust the process, and take it one game at a time, and every other dippy inspirational saying you can put on a t-shirt. But as a team, there really does need to be that special sort of thing that some teams have and some teams can’t seem to find.
Granted, the whole concept of championship chemistry tends to come into focus after the fact if a team wins – the outcome rewrites the narrative – but whatever it is, Georgia has to have it.
For example, the 2016 Clemson Tigers were all about business from moment they lost the national championship to Alabama the season before. The spring practices were sharp, the fall camp was solid, and starting from Deshaun Watson on down, that team had a different, unquantifiable feel to it.
On the flip side, coming off a national title, the 2015 Ohio State Buckeyes – sort of like this year’s Georgia team – came into the season loaded, but with a quarterback controversy. It struggled early, sputtered at times in close games against mediocre teams, and fought its way to wins before that one loss to Michigan State that made all the difference. Unfortunately for that team, the defeat seemed to shake everything loose, but it was too late.
Georgia has to roar from the start.
